Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
-- I JOHN J. HALLOOK, or LIVERPOOL, Nnw oRK.
QWICKE'R BASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming; part of Letters Patent in). 282,516, dated August 7, 1883.
Application filed January 5, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, JO N J. HALLooK, of
Liverpool, in the countyrof Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wicker Baskets, of
which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear,
and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide willow or wicker baskets with a simple, strong, and durable bottom, which shall be easily and firmly securedto the body of the basket; and
. to that end my invention consists in the pecutransverse section of my invention. Fig. 3 is a view of the inner side of the supporting-rim of the bottom. Fig. 4 is a top View of the same,
and Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section of the rlm. I
' Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. I
A denotes the body of an oval or round basket constructed of willows or wickcrs in any ordinary manner, and B represents the bottom of said basket, said bottom being a wooden board or other suitable stiff material.
0 is a rim or hoop secured to the edge of the bottom B, and rabbeted, or constructed in such a manner as to form on the inner side thereof an offset or shoulder, a, upon which the bottom B rests. Said rim 0, I prefer to form of a strip of wood of proper length to reach around the edge of the bottom. This strip I make of a sufficient width to cause it to project above the bottom B, and before applying it thereto I bore transversely through it aseries of holes distributed over the length of the strip, and in such relative positions as to bring the bottom edge of the holes on a line with or a trifle below the upper edges of the bottom, for the purpose hereinafter explained. The strip of wood thus prepared I steam, so as to render it pliable,
and then bend it around the edge of the botconstructed of the shoulder a,
v v as aforesaid, and tie the two ends of the rim together by means of a staple,
b, reaching across the meeting ends of the rim,
and driven into the same, as best seen in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
The body A is built upon the rimmed bot tom by inserting the lower ends of the standards s and the ends of the first row of wicker braiding 0 into the perforations f f in the rim 0, the edge of the bottom becoming thus bound between the shoulder a of the rim and the protruding ends of the wickers, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
It willbe observed that by the described construction and combination of the rim C with the bottomB, seated upon the shoulder a of said rim, the bottom is supported above the ground and protected, and also braced, and to a great extent prevented from warping. The perforated projection of the rim above the bottom greatly facilitates the construction of the body.
Having described my invention, what I claim 1s l. The combination, with the body ofa wicker basket, of a stiff bottom, a rim secured to the edge thereof, and provided with a shoulder for supporting the bottom, and with a perforated projection above the same, and the standards and bottom wickers of the body, inserted in the perforations of said rim, substantially in the manner described and shown.
2. In combination with the wicker body A,
the wooden bottom B, rim 0, provided with the shoulder a, and with perforations in its up per portion, the standards 8, and bottom wickers, e, and the staple b, tying the ends of the rim together, substantially in the manner shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York,
this 26th day of December, 1882.
