H. C. LINK SHIPPING BASKET Fi1d May l2, 1924 Patented Apr. 7, 1925.
HARRY C. LINK, OF CITY, MICHIGAN.
SHIPPING BASKET.
Application filedl Hay 12, 1924. Serial No. 712,733.
To all whom it may concern.'
Beit known that I, HARRY C. LINK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Traverse City, count of Grand Traverse, State of Michigan, lave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shipping Baskets, of which the following is a speciication. l
This invention relates to improvements in shipping baskets. r
The main objects of the invention are:
First, to provide an improved shipping basket for fruit, vegetables and the like which facilitates the packing of the fruit and the packed fruit has an attractive appearance. when the cover is removed.
lSecond, to provide an 'improved shipping basket. having the above advantages which is very strong and durable and permits a plurality of the lled baskets being arranged the baskets or to he contents.
Objects pertain ng to details and economies of my improved shipping basket w11] in super-imposed Eelation without injury to definitely appear from the detailed descrip# tion to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated 1 in the accompanying drawingforming la, part of this application, in which:
Fig. I 1sA a perspective view proved shippingbasket." Y 4 Fig. II isa fragmentary side elevation, partially in vertical central section, the contents being indicated by dottedl lines.
Fig. III is an inverted detail section illusrating the manner of packing the receptac e. Fig. IV is a perspective View of the bottom before it is applied to the receptacle.
of my im- In the drawing similar reference numeralsindicate similar parts in all of the views.
Referring to the drawing, my improved basket comprises a body'l formed as a complete unit of longitudinal staves 2, inner and outer bottom hoops 3 and 4 and outer and inner topf hoops 5 and 6. I also preferably provide an intermediate outer hoop 7. These hoops are suitably stapled or stitched to the staves, the body beingpreferably downwardly tapered' as illustrated.
The bottom 8 comprises a rim' or outer hoop 9 with crossed staves 10 secured thereto. This bottom is adapted to fit Within the bottom hoop of the body unit as indicated by dotted lines vin Fig- III and is secured the-rein by means of the bendable fasteners l1, these fasteners being secured to the botto'm hoops of the body and folded in- Wardly over the rim, thereby supporting the bottom Within the lower end of the body.
,The cover comprises a rim or outer hoop 12 having the crossed bowed staves 13 secured thereto, the staves being outwardly bowed thereby providing a crowned cover.
This cover is detachably secured as by4 means of the slat 14 arranged across the cover and through the handles 15 thereof.
IVith the parts thus formed and arranged the cover is attached and the receptacle in--' verted to permit the contents being packed packed in an arched or crowned relation at the center so that in handling, even though thecontents should shake down the basket still has the appearance of being well filled. Further, the crowning of the cover adds greatly to its strength so that a `plurality ofthe loaded baskets may be arranged one upon the other Without crushing the lower covers. v
Having thus described .my invention what I claim as newA and desir to secure by LettersPatent ist,y
1. In a receptacle, the combination of a body unit comprising-v staves and top and bottom hoops, a bottom unit comprising a Yrim and crossed slats secured thereto, said bottom unit being adapted to be disposed withinl the bottom hoop of said. body unit, said body. unit able fasteners engageable with said rim of said bottom unit for securing the same in positionandla cover unit comprising a rim and crossed outwardly bowed slats secured thereto, coacting as specified.
'2. In a receptacle, the combination of a body unit comprising staves and top and bottom hoops, a bottom unit comprising a rim and crossed slats secured thereto, said bottom unit being adapted to be disposed being provided withloendf Cil and secured within the bottom hoop of said body unit, and a cover unit comprising a rim and crossed outwardly bowed slats secured thereto, eoacting as specified. A
3. A receptacle of the class described comprising a downwardly tapered body unit open at both ends, a bottom, means for securing said bottom within the lower end of saidbody unit after the receptacle has been packed in inverted position, a cover comprising a rim and a plurality of outwardly bowed crossed slats secured thereto, and means for detachably securing said cover to said body unit.
4. A receptacle of the class described comprising a body unit open at both ends, a bottom, means for securing said bottom to said body, a cover comprising a rim and a plurality of outwardly bowed crossed slats secured thereto, and means for detachably securing said coverto said body unit.
5. A receptacle of the class described comprising a body formed as a complete unit, a bottom formed as a separate complete unit, means for securing the bottom within the lower end of said vbody after the receptacle has been packed in inverted position, a crowned cover formed as a complete unit, and means for detachably securing said cover to said body.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
HARRY C. LINK. g.. 5.]
