JOHN R. GRAFT, OF CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA.
FENCE ATTACHMENT.
To (ZZZ whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. GRAFT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Fence Attachment; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to an improvement in fence posts, and the main object of the invention is to provide means for utilizing fence posts for further use after the part that is embedded in the ground has rotted.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown.
In the drawings :F igure 1 is a side elevation of a section of a fence constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through one of the posts.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a post which is provided with a tongue 2, which tongue engages a mortise in the base member 3. After the ends of these posts have been rotted, of course the posts thereby become shortened, and the fence is restored to its normal height by adding a gas pipe 4. The gas pipe or tubular member at supports the top wire 5, which wire is held in position by a loop 6. The loop 6 extends e11- tirely through the tubular member 4, and thence around the wire 7, which is the third wire from the top. Here the looped wire 6 Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 21, 1910.
Patented May 31, 1910. Serial No. 545,062.
engages the third wire 7, said loop then passes through the post and then upwardly and back through the post again, as at 8, and passes over the wire 9 of the fence. Then the strands of the wire are parted, and one strand wraps around the wire 9, as at 10, and the other strand wraps as at 11. Thus it will be seen that the one looped wire secures the three strands of the fence wire to the tubular member and to the post. It will also be seen that this tubular attachment may be employed with fences of various kinds.
What is claimed is 1. An attachment for fences, consisting of a vertical tubular member, a looped wire passing downwardly through said tubular member, thence through the post and thence around the tubular member, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. An attachment for fences comprising a tubular member, a looped wire extending through said tubular member, said wire being arranged to hold one of the fence wires against the upper end of said tubular member and also a fence wire against the lower end of said tubular member, the extremities of said looped wire being so arranged as to rigidly connect said tubular member to a post.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN R. GRAFT. Witnesses:
