SMOKE-BELL SUPPORT.

Be it known that I, DANIEL F. MCCARTHY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Smoke-Bell Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to smoke bell supports for use in connection with gas fixtures and the object thereof is to provide a support of such class in the manner as hereinafter set forth and claimed and which shall be simple in its construction and arrangement, durable, efficient in its use, strong, readily set up in operative position with respect to the fixture enabling the convenient positioning of the smoke bell and inexpensive to manufacture.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to, which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is an elevation of an inverted lamp showing the adaptation therewith of a smoke bell support in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of an ordinary gas fixture showing the adaptation therewith of a smoke bell support in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 3 is an inverted perspective view of the base of the smoke bell support.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, 1 denotes a gas fixture provided with a cut-off 1 and further provided with an elbow 1 which is formed with a vertically-disposed screw threaded nipple 1 of less diameter than the diameter of the elbow 1 whereby a shoulder 1 is provided at the junction of the nipple 1 with the elbow 1*. Attached to the nipple 1 is a Bunsen burner 2 which has connected thereto an inverted lamp 3.

jecting therefrom a vertically-extending screw-threaded nipple 2 of less diameter than the elbow whereby a shoulder 2 will be formed at the junction of the nipple 2 with the elbow 2*. To the nipple 2 is attached a burner 3 The foregoing elements referred to in connection with Figs. 1 and 2 are of known construct-ion.
A smoke bell support in accordance with this invention and as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 includes a base plate a which gradually decreases in width from one end toward the other and at its enlarged end is formed with an opening 5 surrounded by a cut-away or beveled or counter-sunk portion 6 to provide a seat whereby the plate can be mounted upon one end of an elbow, the said end abutting against the seat. The base plate 4 at its smaller end is formed with a screwthreaded opening 8.
The smoke bell support further comprises a suspension arm and in Fig. 1 the said arm consists of a vertically-extending portion'lO and a right-angularly disposed portion 11, which projects from the upper terminus of the portion 10. The portion 10 at its lower end is threaded, as at 9 and the said threaded portion is adapted to engage in the threaded opening 8 whereby the suspension arm is adj ustably connected to the base plate 4 so that the said suspension arm can be elevated and lowered when occasion so requires. The right-angularly disposed portion of the suspension arm is provided with a notch 11 in which is adapted to be mounted the hanger 12 carried by the smoke bell 13.
The suspension arm as shown in Fig. 2 consists of a vertically-extending portion 1O provided with screw-threads engaging in the threaded opening 8 of the base plate. The portion 10 terminates in an angularlydisposed portion 10 the latter merging in a vertically-extending portion 10 which terminates in an angularly-disposed portion,
10 which is formed with a notch 11 for the reception of the hanger 12 to which is connected the smoke bell 13. The suspension arm as shown in Fig. 3 is vertically-adjustable owing to the providing of the portion l0 with screw-threads. The smoke bell 13 can be shifted upon the angularly-disposed portion 10 When the smoke bell support is arranged in position, the base plate 4 thereof is mount ed upon the elbow 1 or the elbow 2 the cut-away portion 6 of the base plate providing a clearance whereby the upper por tion of the elbow can extend into the plate 4, the nipple 1 or the nipple 2 extending through the opening 5. The base plate 4 is clamped in position by the burner 2 or 3 the burner being screwed down upon the nipple and fixedly securing the base plate in position upon the elbow.
The right-angularly disposed portion 10 of the suspension arm shown in Fig. 2 is provided so that the smoke bell 13 will be supported directly above the jet.
The cutaway portion 6 in the plate 4 provides for the threaded nipple to be engaged for a sufiicient portion of its length by the burner to prevent leakage as is obvious.
What I claim is:
A smoke bell support comprising a base plate adapted to be mounted upon the elbow of a gas fixture and formed with a cut-away portion to provide an interiorly-arranged seat against which abuts the elbow, said plate further provided with an opening communicating with said cut-away portion through which is adapted to extend a threaded nipple carried by the elbow, and a suspension arm connected to said base plate and adapted to suspend a smoke bell.
