W. B. PALMER.
LAMP COLLAR. w No. 334 043. Patented Jan. 12,1886.
Witness as Invrmior:
WILL/AM B. PALMER, I I by W 40w ATENT FFICE.
WILLIAM: B. PALMER, OF GREENWIGH, NEW? YORK.
LAM P-COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.334,043, dated January 12, 1886.
Application filed August 26, 1885. Serial No. 175,346. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. PALMER, of Greenwich, in the county of 'Washington and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Collars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in metallic collars for lamps whose bodies are made of glass,-earthenware, or other similar material; and the object of my invention is to provide the means for fastening a metallic collar into the neck or body of a lamp of the character above set forth in the most secure and reliable manner. This object I attain by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, being herein referred to, forms part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a lamp provided with my collar; Fig. 2, ahorizontal section of the same at the line xx,- Fig. 3, a side elevation of my metallic collar, and Fig. 4 a vertical section of the same.
As represented in the drawings, A is the body of a lamp, which may be made, in any desired form, of glass or other suitable material. The said body is provided at its apex or other suitable place with an annular rim, a, which will circumscribe the circular opening for receiving the wick tube or burner. The bore of said circular opening is provided with an internal screw-thread, a, which is cast or otherwise produced in the material of which the body of the lamp is made. The metallic collar B is made of thin sheet metal in a tubular form, and has an external screwthreaded portion, b, which is adapted to screw snugly into the screw-thread a,formed in the rim of the body of the lamp. The collar B is made integral with or secured to an upper collar, 1), having an internal screw-thread, If, that is adapted to receive a corresponding thread that is formed on the wick-tube or burner for the purpose of securing the latter in place. The upper collar, 1), is extended laterally to cover the upper surface of the annular rim (1, and it has at its outer edge a pendent cylindrical curtain, B, which is concentric to the collar B, so as to form an annular space that is adaptedto receive the rim (1 of the lamp-body.
The lower portion, b of the collar B is extended downward to project below the shoulder a of the lamp-body. The said downward extension may be made, as shown in the drawings, in the form of a plain cylindrical tube whose diameter is equal to the smallest diameter of the threaded portion 2); or, when preferred, the screw-thread may be continued to the lower end of said extension. The collar B is first attached to the lamp-body A by screwing it into the rim a, and when required a preparatory application of plaster-of-paris or other cement may be introduced to produce an oiltight joint between said collar and the rim to. After the collar B is screwed down to its place in the body of the lamp it is firmly secured therein by expanding the part b around the shoulder a by spinning it or pressing it out in any suitable manner.
While I only show and describe herein my metallic collar B as applied to the wick-tube of a lamp, it is obvious that without further invention it is adapted for use in the same manner for the filling-openings of lamps, and
this latter use is included in the scope of my invention.
I am aware that lamp-collars have heretofore been attached to the bodies by screwing them in, and that it is not new to expand the lower end of the collar outwardly within the body of the lamp. Therefore I do not broadly claim those features when separately considered.
I claim as myinvention The combination, with the body A of the lamp provided with an annular rim, a, having an internal screw-thread, a, formed in the opening thereof, as herein described, of a metallic collar, B, provided with an external screw-threaded portion, Z), adapted to engage in the screw-thread a and expanded underthe shoulder a, an upper collar, 1), having an internal screw-thread, b and a pendent cylindrical curtain, B, concentrically arranged to said collar B, to fit over the annular rim a of the lamp-body, as herein specified.
