ALONZO FRENCH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAM P-SUPPORTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,026, dated December 11, 1883.
Application filed April 22, 18 81. (No model.)
To on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALONZO Fnnnon, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Lamp-Supporting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lamp-supporting de; vices, one object'of my invention being to so construct the support that the lamp cannot be accidentally detachedtherefrom, and further objects being to insure a proper diffusion of thelight, to prevent the accidental detachment of the chimney or globe from the burner, and to, improve the construction of the lamp fountain or reservoir.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of alamp-bracket and chimney-holder constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2, aperspective view of part of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a plan view of part of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a side view of the pivoted lamp-bracket without the chimneyholder.
In Figs. 1 and 2, A is a plate secured to a wall or partition in the usual manner. ,To a projection, a, on this plate A, is hinged an an internal screw-thread adapted to a similar Instead of securing the fountain to the ring by a screw-thread, there'may be in the ring a projection adapted to a groove, partly vertical and partly horizontal, in the'fountain, so as to form the well-known bayonet-joint. The screw-thread is, however, preferred.
Near the bottom of the fountain and below the threaded portion of the same is formed an annular groove,y,which is adapted for the reception of the confining-screws sometimes used in connection with lamp-supporting devices, the fountain thus constructed being capable of more general use than if it possessed the screwthread or bayonet-joint alone.
The arm B, its pivotpin e, and ring 12 may be economically made of cast-iron in one piece.
On the wall-plate A is another projection, a, for the pivot f of a stud, h, to which is hinged an arm, D, the latter terminating in a ring, d, threaded internally, and adapted to the threaded portion i of a chimney or globe, G, the lower end of which rests on the fiangem of the burner H. The ring d and chimney or globe G may also be constructed for attachment to each other by abayonet-j oint, or sections of a screw-thread may be adopted in securing the ring I) tothe fountain and ring (I to the chimney, the modes of fastening being always such that accidental detachment is rendered impossible. The pivotpin of the arm D being in line with the pivotpin of. the arm B, the fountain, burner, and chimney or globe can be turned together to any desired point, and ready access can be had to the burner of the lamp by turning the arm D and chimney upward on the stud h.
Fig. Ashows the retaining-ring b and the arm B, having a pivot adapted to a single projection on awall-plate, A, this plan being used when the lamp-burner is furnished with an ordinary chimney.
As regards the retaining-ring for the fountain, it may be remarked that it can be used in connection with wire hangers or other supports than the arm B, its tendency to cast a shadebeing much less thanthe fountain-receiving cups or socketsof ordinary lamp-brackets. The ring d is secured to the chimney or globe G at such an altitude above the flame of the lamp that it cannot detract from the proper effect of the flame.
In making a continuous screw-thread on the lamp-fountain, fins or projections are formed thereon at the mold-j oints, which interfere with the proper application of the ring b to thelamp; hence,in carrying out my invention, I discontinued the thread for ashort distance on each side of the parting of the mold, so as to form a blank space,a2, this discontinuance of the thread not being of suificient extent to interfere with its proper retaining and supporting duty.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the wall-plate with the arm B, pivoted thereto, and provided with an open ring, b, constructed for attachment to the fountain of a lamp, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the wall-plate of a lamp-supporting bracket with alamp-supporting-arm, B, pivoted to said plate, so as to swing laterally, and with a globe or chimney supporting arm, D, pivoted to the plate independently of the arm B and free to swing vertically, as set forth.
3. The combination of the wall-plate, the lamp-supporting arm B, pivoted to the said plate, the stud h, also pivoted to the plate, and
the chimney-supporting arm D, hinged to the of attaching the fountain to a support, as set 10 stud, all substantially as specified. forth.
4. The combination of the lamp-supp orting In testimony whereof I have signed my name arm or hangerwithacast-metal ring having an to this specification in the presence of two 5 internal screw-thread or equivalent means of subscribing witnesses.
securing a lamp-fountain thereto, as set forth. ALONZO FRENCH.
5. The lamp fountain or reservoir having Vitnesses: near the bottom an annular groove, y, and above ARMER F. MCCORMICK,
said groove a screw-th read or equivalent means HARRY SMITH.
