ELECTRIC CANDLE-LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13, 1906.
Application filed pril 16, 1906. Serial No. 311,913.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CoNsrAN'r K. DECH- ERD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric Candle- Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the figures of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a side view of the socket and an electric candle-lamp constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 a vertical central section of the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in electric candle-lamps--that is, a candlestick or candelabra adapted to support an imitation candle, at the upper end of which is arranged an incandescent-light bulb, the wires from the bulb passin down through the candle-shell and throng the socket of the candlestick or candelabra. In the usual construction of candle-lamps of this character it is necessary to produce a structure especially and solely adapted for electric lights.
The object of this invention is to so arrange the socket member that, if desired, the electric fixture may be removed and a candlestick or candelabra used with a holder for a regular candle or in which a real candle may be used, if desired, thus enabling the manufacturer to readily fill orders for any style of lamps without requiring a change in the construction of the parts of the candlestick or candelabra; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and partioularlyrecited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I employ a head or socket 2 of any approved desi n and arranged at the upper end of the cand estick or on the arm of the candelabra. This socket is of usual construction, except that W'lthlll it is located a nut 3, which is secured in place by the cast metal forming the socket. This socket receives the usual flange or bobiche 4:, the central portion of which sits within the socket 2. place an ordinary candle may be used or the usual form of candle-lamps; but if an electric light is desired I employ a hollow shaft or stem 5, threaded at its lower end to engage with the nut 3. Secured upon the stem is a collar 6, having a shoulder which fits within the central portion of the flange, this collar being held against rotation by a lock-nut 8. Around the upper face of the collar is an annular flange 9, which forms a seat for the usual shell 10 made to imitate a wax candle. The upper end of the stem 5 is threaded for engagement with the usual plug '11 of an incandescent-light fixture, this plug entering the upper end of the shell 10. By making the collar 6 adjustable it may be moved up or down to clamp and rigidly hold the shell in place, taking up for any shrinkage which is apt to occur. It will be seen that the parts for this electric feature may be kept in stock, and when an electric candle-lamp or candelabra is required it is only necessary to screw the parts in place and arrange the wires, using the same head as is employed for ordinary candlesticks or candle-lamps.
I claim-- 1. The combination with a socket, of a nutlocated therein, a stem adapted to engage with said nut, a collar on said stem, and an electric-light plug secured. to the upper end of said stem, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a socket, of a nut located therein, a stem adapted to engage with'said nut, a collar on said stem and formed with a shoulder to enter said socket the upper face of said collar formed with an annular flange, a shell located within said flange and surrounding said stem, and a plug engaging with the upper end of the said stern and with the upper end of said shell, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CONSTANT K. DECHERD.
