Be it known that I, CHARLES II. PELTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat and Coat Hangers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to hat and coat hangers and the object of the invention is to provide a hanger of this character with sim ple and effective means for locking the hat and coat upon the han 'er and preventing their removal by unauthorized persons; and to this end it is a further object of this invention to provide a lock comprising a casing and a single movable member mounted therein.

l/Vith these objects in view my invention consists of certain novel features and certain combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter described and then more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a hat and coat hanger embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 8 is a front elevation, with the face plate removed from the lock casing; Fig. 1 is a detail view of the movable member of the lock; and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the key.

In these drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention and have shown the same with a base having a looking projection, and in the present construction this base comprises a plate 1 adapted to be rigidly secured to the wall or other supporting surface, and has at its upper end pivot lugs 2. A projection 3 extends outwardly from the plate 1, preferably at a point some distance below the pivot lugs 2, and is formed integral therewith. This lug or projection is hollowed out at its upper side to form a recess adapted to receive the locking member, as hereinafter described. The plate 1 has a downwardly extending portion upon which is mounted a coat hook 4: of any suitable character. In the present instance the screw portion of the hook 41- extends through an aperture in the plate 1 and into the wall, thus serving both to secure the hook to the base and the base to the Wall.

a size and shape adapted to extend about the crown of a hat and to engage the brim thereof. The ends of this loop extend upwardly therefrom and are rigidly secured to a oasing 6, which, in turn, has pivot lugs 7 which are connected to the pivot lugs of the base. Pivotally mounted within the casing (3 is a lever 8 having a locking member 9, which is here shown as comprising a projection extending downwardly fro-m the lower edge of the lever 8 and through an opening 10 in the lower side of the casing 6. The opening 10 is arranged immediately above the locking projection 3 and the length of the locking member 9 is such that, when the lever 8 is in its lowermost position, the locking member will enter the recess in the proj ection 3 and thereby lock the casing and the retaining member 5 against movement. The lever 8 has also an upwardly extending projection or finger 11, preferably arranged near the pivotal center thereof and having a nose 12. The finger 11 is so arranged as to be engaged by a key 13 and actuated to move the lever about its pivotal center and thus lift the locking member out of the recess in the projection 3. This key has in its inner end a recess let adapted to engage the nose 12 of the finger 11, and is also provided at a point between its ends with a notch 15 adapted to receive a project-ion 16, extending from the upper edge of the lever 8, when the inner end of the key is in engagement with the nose 12 of the finger 11. The length of the projection 16 is such that should a key be inserted in the casing in which the position of the notch 15 does not correspond to the position of the projection 16, the end of the projection will engage the edge of the key and the lever will be locked against upward movement. It will be apparent that by slightly varying the relative positions of the notch 15 and the projection 16 each lock may be so constructed that it can be actuated by its own key only.

Vhen the coat and hat have been hung upon the hook 4:, and the retaining member moved into its lowermost position, with the loop about the crown of the hat, the looking member 9 will automatically drop into the recess of the locking projection 3 and the retaining member will be locked against movement, and will be retained in its closed position until the proper key has been in sorted in the casing to actuate the lever 8 and raise the locking member out of enmil gagement with the locking projection. will be noted that the construction of the hanger, and particularly the lock for securing the same in its closed position, is exceedingly simple, the lock comprising but one moving part; and further, that the lock is an effective one and cannot be easily released without the use of a key. Further, it will be noted that when the key ias been inserted and the retaining member moved into its elevated position, the projection 16 of the lever will remain in the notch 15 of the key and will prevent the withdrawal of the key until the retaining member has again been moved into its lower or retaining position.

I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to persons skilled in the art.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination, with a fixed part, and a locking projection mounted on said fixed part and having a recess, of a retaining member, a pivoted locking part carried by said retaining member and adapted to enter the recess in said projection, and means for moving said locking part about its pivotal center.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination, with a base and a retaining member pivotally connected thereto, of a locking projection carried by one of said parts, a lever pivotally mounted on the other of said parts, a locking member carried by said lever and adapted to engage said pro jection, and means for actuating said lever.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination, with a base, and a retaining member pivotally connected thereto, of a locking projection secured to said base, a casing secured to said retaining member, a lever pivotally mounted in said casing and having a part adapted to engage said'projection, and means for actuating said lever.

5. In a device of the character described, the combination, with a base and a retaining member pivotally connected thereto, of a locking projection secured to said base, a casing secured to said retaining member, a lever pivotally mounted in said casing, a locking member carried by one edge of said lever and adapted to engage said projection, a projection extending from the edge of said lever opposite said locking member, and a key adapted to enter said casing and actuate said lever and having a notch to receive the projection carried by said lever.

In a device of the character described, the combination, with a base, a retaining member pivotally connected to said base, and a locking projection carried by said base, of a lock mounted on said retaining member and comprising a single moving part, said part consisting of a lever having an actuating finger and a locking member formed integral therewith.

7. In a device of the character described, the combination, with a base, a retaining member pivotally connected to said base, and a locking projection carried by said base, of a casing carried by said retaining member, a lever pivotally mounted in said casing, and
