BANK
FledFeb. 26. 1926 Eye/afar fa? wwwa/71W@ Patented July 15, 1930 PATENT OFFICE ARTHUR C. PRINCE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS BANK Application led February 26, 1926. Serial No. 90,740.
This invention relates to a bank7 and particularly to a pocket bank and to the locking mechanism for such bank. It has for one object to provide a removable and locking lid for a. bank. Another object is to provide in such a lid a locking mechanism with a minimum of moving parts. Another object is to provide in such a lid a locking mechanism which will lock the bank equally at widely separated points. Other objects will appear from time to time throughout the specification and claims.
My invention is illustrated more or less diagrammatically in t-he accompanying drawings; wherein:
Figure l is a view in perspective of the bank;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the lid;
Figure 3 is a horizontal cross section on line 3 3 of Figure l, drawn on an enlarged scale; e
Figure l is a section taken on line 4 4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the lid on the same scale used in Figures 3 and 4;
Figure 6 is a section through the lid taken on line 6 6 of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a view of the key;
Figure 8 is a section taken on line 8 8 of Figure 3 showing the key in position;
Figure 9 is a perspective View of one of the locking lugs.
Like parts are indicated by like characters throughout.
A isI the shell of a bank. B is thek lid. The lid B is providedfwith an inwardly or downwardly projecting skirt B1 and a laterally extending flange B2. The lid is provided with a more or less conical inwardly bent portion BS which is formed integral, pref erably, with the remainder of the lid but need not be so. Pivotally mounted in the portion B3 of the lid is a locking cam C. This cam is provided with a pair rof cam faces C1 C1 each of which terminates in a bent nose C2. C3 C3 are stop portions mounted on the cam C. In the form here shown the cam C has inwardly bent from it a ferrule or engaging portion C4 which engages the inwardly bent portion B3 of the lid so that the cam may be rotated about the center of the lid, which is perforated to receive it.
D D` are locking lugs. Each of them is provided with a narrowed portion D1, which portion is engaged by the inwardly bent ears D2 formed in the skirt B1 of the lid B. By means of these ears, the lugs are held in position but are permitted to tilt with relation to the lid. The lid is provided with a pair of slots D3 D3' which are preferably 60 located diametrically opposite each other. D'1 is the locking nose of thelug D. It is mounted so as to project through the slot D3, into the groove D5.
Eis a filler member andE1 is a cover which G5 is mounted at the outer end of the lid B and serves to give a finished appearance and to carry a label or other device. It is provided with a perforation or key hole E2.
l/Vhile I have shown an operative device, still it will be obvious that many changes might be made in size, shape and arrangement of parts without departing materially from the spirit of my invention; and I wish therefore that my invention be taken as in a sense 7 5 diagrammatic.
The use and operation of my invention are as follows: j
As shown in Figure 3 the lid is in position and is locked. In order -to unlock it, the vkey is used and is moved so as to rotate the cam plate C, and the nose C2 moves from a. position in the rear Yof the locking nose D4 and in so moving slides along the inner surface of the locking lug D and tilts it and finally comesto rest with the nose C2 at the inner end of the lug. This is the relation shown in Figure 6 and in that position the locking lugs have been tilted so as to withdraw the locking nose back within the skirt portion ofthe lid; `Excess movement in this direction is prevented by stops C3 which contact the lugs D as shown; When the parts have been moved linto this position,` the lidV may be removed.V In order to relock the lid, it must be put in position and the key turned in the reverse direction, movin-g the locking nose C2 so as to force the part D4 again outward through the slot D3 and into locking position shown in Figure 3.
I claim: 1. In combination with a receptacle having an opening, a removable cover therefor, a plurality of locking lugs and an unattached 5 movable controlling member adapted to be moved in one direction to move said lugs into the locking position and adapted to be moved 4 in the opposite direction to withdraw them from locking position, and stops on such lo member to hmit its movement in either direction, said controlling member having frictional contact with said locking lugs.
2. In combination with a receptacle having an opening, a removable closure therefor and locking means for such closure, including a curved member mounted for rotation within the closure and provided with a locking lug adapted, when such curved member is inone position of rotation, to be withdrawn from looking position, and when such curved member is in another position of rotation to extend into locking position, to loc-k the same in position in the receptacle, and a curved locking cam member mounted for rotation on such closure and provided with a cam portion adapted to contact such curved locking member, and to move it into and out of the locking position.
3. In combination with a receptacle having an opening, a removable closure therefor and means for locking such closure in position, such closure formed with an inwardly extending skirt portion, such locking means bein mounted within such portion, and includmg a tiltable locking member having a locking lug in combination with a pair of nWa-rdl bent lugs formed integrally with such skirt portion and engaging and supporting such locking member forfmovement. 4o 4. Incombination with a receptacle having an opening, a removable closure therefor and means for locking such closure in position, such closure formed with an inwardly extending skirt portion, such locking means being mounted within such portion, and includlng a tiltable locking member having a locking lug in combination with a pair of inwardly bent lugs, formed integrally with Y such skirt portion and engaging and supporting such locking member for movement, in combination with a cam member mounted for rotation within such skirt portion and provided with a cam face adapted to engage such locking member and in one position to withdraw it within the skirt portion and in another position to force it outward beyond the skirt portion to lock the closure in'position within the receptacle.
\ Signed atChicagm county of Cook, and 0 State of Illinois, this 20th` day of February,
ARTHUR C. PRINCE.
