Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES W. WILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVinterport, in the county of lValdo and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Floor-Surfacing Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to floor surfacing devices, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a simple, reliable and efficient device for scraping and sand papering floors in which the scraper blade will be set at an angle to the machine so as to pro vide a shearing action of the blade.

Another object of the invention is to provide a frame having smooth side surfaces so as not to mar the base board of a room, said frame being mounted upon two wheels and having a wedge plate positioned upon the front of the frame to provide means for securing a scraper blade at an angle to the frame, said frame being provided with a removable box adapted for the reception of weights so that the pressure upon the scraper may be regulated, and the amount of floor surface to be scraped gaged.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a wheeled frame having a handle and a scraper blade with pivoted arms adapted to engage a sand paper holding block, said block having its outer face provided with an angular depression which is adapted to receive the scraper blade when the block is swung upon its arms into operative position.

WVith these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, the sand paper block being swung into operative position beneath the scraper blade. Fig. 4 is a trans verse sectional view upon the line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the sand paper block. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view uponthe line 66 of Fig. 5.

In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 designates the frame of the machine. This frame 1 comprises sides 2, front 3 and a rear connecting portion 4. The rear portion 3 is diverged toward the center and is provided with a handle bar 5 attached thereto by suitable side plates 6. This handle bar 5 is provided with a suitable handle 6, by which the machine is operated. The front 3 of the frame is arranged at a direct right angle to the longitudinal sides 2 and is provided with a plurality of spaced perforations, and these perforations are adapted to alme with similar perforations provided within a base plate 8. The perforations provided in these members are adapted for the reception of suitable retaining elements 9, by which they are secured together.

A wedge plate 7 may be constructed at any desired angle so as to give a position for a shearing cut to the scraper blade. The blade 10 is provided with a plurality of cut away portions extending vertically so as to provide a space or opening between each of the fingers, and by this means it will be readily noted that the said blade may be effectively regulated in an upward or downward position by merely loosening the retaining elements 9 so that the depth of the cut may be easily and quickly regulated and sustained in said adjusted position by merely tightening the said elements 9. The blade 10 has its sharpened face inclined toward the body of the frame and the machine is adapted to be drawn in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Positioned between the sides 2 of the frame and mounted in suit-able bearings are a pair of wheels 11 which are adapted to assist in the operation of the device.

The sides 2 of the frame are provided with vertically extending portions 12, and these extending portions have their inner faces reduced so as to provide shoulders 13 adapted for the reception of a removable weight box 14. This box 14 is adapted to be supplied with any desired number of weighted members 15, so that a desired pressure my be imparted to the cut-ting surface of the blade 10 and the depth at which the floor is to be scraped readily regulated. The sides of the box 14 may be provided with suitable cut away portions or depressions 16 which are adapted to engage with the projections 12 the box 14 is a pair of arms 17. The free ends of these arms 17 are pivotally connected with a sand paper receiving block 18. This block 18 is provided with hinged clamps 19 by which the sand paper is effectively retained in position thereon. The under face of the block 18 is provided with a depression or cut away portion 20, and this portion 20 is adapted to receive the front 3 of the frame as well as the knife 10 and face plate 8 when the block is swung upon the arms 17 into operative position for sand papering a floor as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. hen the blade 10 is in operation the arms 17 are swung rearwardly so as to deposit the block upon the rear portion of the frame 1.

In floor scraping device, a frame constructed of a single casting comprising a front provided with parallel sides, said sides having upwardly extending rectangular portions, the sides diverging rearwardly and upwardly from the rectangular projections and joined to form a handle receiving member, rectangular projections formed with shoulders upon their adjacent faces, a weight box adapted to rest upon the shoulders, a wedge plate upon the front of the frame, a scraper blade upon the wedge plate, a face plate upon the blade, and means for removably securing the face blade, scraper blade and wedge plate to the frontof the frame.
