ROAD-MACHINE noeaaav.
Application filed March 13,
1 b aZZ whom 2'26 may concern Be it known that l, OAKMAN A. MOODY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canaan, in the county of Somerset and rate of Maine, have invented a new and useful Road-lidachine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to road machines and more particularly to machines for compressing snow so that roads can be more easily traveled after heavy snow storms than would otherwise be possible.
A further object is to provide a machine of this character designed to be used in con junction with a sleigh, the weight of the sleigh and its lead serving to press the machine upon the snow so as to pack it as the structure is drawn forward.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangements of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, with out departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings:l igure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a sleigh in position upon a structure constituting the present invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line AB Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the side scrapers. Fig. t is a perspective view of one end portion of the snow compressing member.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a beam preferably of wood and which is triangular in cross section, the top of this beam being substantially horizontal while the bottom thereof is inclined downwardly and rearwardly and provided with a wear plate 2 extending throughout the width and length thereof and terminating at its ends in triangular wings 3 which diverge upwardly and rear wardly. A. broad tongue 4.- is extended rearwardly from the middle portion of the wear plate 2 and is extended downwardly below Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented it), 1914.
1913. Serial No. 754,188.
but back of the beam 1. Flat scraping blades 5, preferably oblong, are extended across the ends of the beam, each of these plates being pivotally connected to the beam as indicated at 6. Furthermore each plate has an arcuate slot 7 and this slot is adapted to receive a bolt 8 extending laterally from the adjacent wing 3 and provided with a nut or other-clamping element. Thus it will be seen that the blades 5 can be adjusted angularly about their pivots 6 and can be secured in adjusted position by means of the bolts 8. Chains 9 are preferably on tended from the beam 1 and pins 10 or other stop devices may be located on the beam.
111 using the apparatus the same is placed on the snow, the scraping blades 5 being first adjusted angularly so as to bring the lower surface of the wear plate 2 at any desired angle relative to the horizontal. The front portions of the runners of a sleigh 11 are then placed on the beam 1 and between the stop devices 10 after which the chains 9 are fastened to the sleigh so as thus to bind the beam 1 against the runners. When the sleigh is drawn forward the snow in the paths of the blades 5 will be deflected laterally while the snow in the path of the beam 1 will be pressed downwardly by the wear plate The snow at the center of the path of the apparatus will be further compressed by the tongue l so as thus to form a compact path in which the horses using the road can travel. If the snow is not sufliciently packed after the apparatus has been drawn over it once, the operation can be repeated one or more times.
Obviously the wear plate can be dispensed with if desired and various other changes can be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts. Also instead of attaching the sleigh or other vehicle at the center of the compressing beam, the same can be arranged at either side of the center thereof. The position of the path forming device can also be changed relative to the beam.
"What is claimed is:
A road machine including a transversely extending snow compressing element including a wear plate, wings upstanding from and integral with the ends of the wear plate and diverging both upwardly and as my own, I have hereto afiixecl my signarearwardly, scraping blades mounted for ture in the presence of two Witnesses. angular adjustment upon the Wings and diverging both upwardly and rearwarclly, OAKMAN MOODY and means for holding the blades in the poitnesses: sit-ions to Which they are adjusted. ALPHEUS NAsoN,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing IRVING DAVIS.
