SNOW-SCRAPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,307, dated February 21, 183.9.

Be it known that I, JOHN W. HAINES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fort Fairfield in the county of Aroostook and State of Haine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snow-Scrapers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or gures of reference marked therein, which form a part of t-his specification. I

My invention relates to certain new and usefulimprovementsin snow-Scrapers; and itconsists in the novel construction and arrangement of the parts thereof, which will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

The object of my invention is to provide a snow-scraper which is adapted for forming roadways or breaking snow-covered roads, the parts thereof being simple and effective in their construction and operation, strong and durable, easily handled and readily understood, and of comparatively inexpensive manufacture. I attain this object by the construction illustrated in theaecompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate simi- 'lar parts in the several views, and in which- Figure lis a perspective view of my improved form of road or snow scraper. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof; Fig. 4, detail perspective views of attachments to my improvement.

A indicates the side beams, which form the runners, which have two cross-beams, A', near each end thereof and crossing the top portions to form braces. A central cross-beam, A2, is also provided, which has upwardly-projecting fulcrum-brackets a, which receive hand-levers B B, which are pivoted therein. The front ends of thailand-levers B have links I) secured thereto at one end, and at their opposite ends to links b', attached to movable scrapers C C.

The Scrapers C are pivoted to the side bars, A, by a pivot-bar, C', passing through supporting-beams Q2, arranged on the top forward portions of the scrapers C, and through bearing-plates c, secured to the forward portion of 4the side beams or runners, A, under the front beveled ends of the said runners. The front ends of the said Scrapers are provided with metal bindings or sheathings C, which resist wear thereupon. i

Mounted against the forward inclined ends of the runners A, and resting against the beams G2, are fenders D, which are formed of two pieces of material hinged at or about their central portion, so as to extend over the side of the machine, and are supported in adjustment at the sides by removable brace-strips E. TWhen the said strips E are removed from the side sections of the fenders, the same can be readily folded against the sides of the machine for purposes which will be readily apparent.

The Scrapers are slotted at their rear portions, and the runners extend through said slots, and with outer strips, d, and the inner strips lying adjacent to the sides of the runners form guides for the vertical movement of the said Scrapers. By forcing either one or both of the levers B downward the scrapersC are raised and set in operative position. The fenders throw the snow to one side as it is loosened by the forward beveled` ends of the Scrapers. By this means hardened crusts of snow may be readily broken and removed and a roadway quickly formed.

It will be understood that draftpower will be applied to my device by suitable means. The parts of the improvement being simple and effective in their construction and operation, they will be readily understood and controlled.

The utility and adaptability of my improvement being obviously apparent, it is unnecessary to further enlarge upon the same herein.

Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new isl. rIhe combination of the side boards forming runners, the adjustable Scrapers, the handlevers for adjusting said Scrapers, and the fenders, constructed as set forth and arranged on the top of the Scrapers against the forward ends of the runners, substantially as described.
