Description

W. GLTHATCHER. TROUSERS HANGER. APPLICATION FILED JULY 9, 1909.
959, 181 Patented May 24-, 1910.
1/ WITNESSES ;sf MZENTOR 6 I G d @Atlamsy UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. THATCHER, OF CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR T0 KENNIE T. EATON, OF GHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE.
TROUSERS-HANGER.
Patented May 24:, 1910.
Original application filed August 24, 1908, Serial No. 450,012. Divided and this application filed July 9,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. THATCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers- Hangers, (for which this application is filed as a division of my application filed Aug. 2%, 1908, Serial No. 450,012 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The trousers-hanger which is the subject of this specification is designed or intended more particularly as an attachment to a coathanger, so as to support one or more pairs of trousers beneath the coat-hanger and Within the coat or other garment hung thereon, as set forth in my said former application; however my device may be suspended from or attached to any suitable supporting means and used independently as a trousers-hanger.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combination garment support, showing my improved trousers-hanger as an attachment to a coat-supporting yoke. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the trousers-hanger detached from the yoke or coat-hanger. Figs. 3'and 41. are perspective views of the unassembled parts of the device. Fig. 5 is a central vertical crosssection; the full lines showing the open position of the trousers-hanger and the dot ted lines showing the closed position.
In Fig. 1 the letter a denotes a hook or bracket supporting a coat-hanger Z) to which the trousers-hanger is medially attached to depend therefrom.
The trouserslianger, consisting of a spring clamp or clip for embracing the ends of the trouser-legs, depends centrally from the coathanger by means of an arm 6 fastened on the back of the coat-hanger, said arm 6 being preferably an integral extension of the back plate or jaw cl of the trousers-hanging clamp. Said clamp comprises two sheet metal parts, namely a back plate or jaw d and a front plate or jaw 0, so formed and assembled, without rivet, screw or other fastening, as to provide a hingedike connection Serial No. 506,814.
and hold the plates or jaws closed together yieldingly or under springpressure. To accomplish this, the plate 0 is formed or provided with resilient curved or approximately cylindrical extensions f which encompass the upper edge of the plate (Z and bear against the back side thereof; while the plate cl is formed or provided on its upper part with outstanding forward projections g which bear against and are embraced by or seated in the curved lips h of short to) sections of the plate 0; the parts 9 and being preferably on the ends of the respective plates. This provides practically a hinge or pivotal connection, and prevents relative displacement of the jaws or plates, while the force of the springs or resilient portions f holds the lower edges of the jaws or plates closed together. The front plate 0 is also provided with a medial tongue or upwardly and forwardly extending handle c', preferably integral with the plate, by means of which the clamp can be opened to receive or release the trousers. A. link or bracelet 1' loosely encircles the tongue 2' and supporting arm 6. Until the trousers are adjusted in the hanger, the clamp can be held open, against resistance of the springs f, by seating the link j in a groove or indentation 70 across the upper part of the tongue 17, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and By pressing on the tongue the link will be released and drop, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 5, allowing the clamp to shut or close.
As will be seen by reference to Fig. 1, the coat-hanger being offset or mounted at a distance from a wall, door or other support, and there being ample room behind and above the coat-hanger, consequently a coat, jacket, cloak or any similar garment may be placed thereupon from behind, so as to present the lapels or front of the coat outward. lVith the coat in this position, the trousers-hanger is exposed and conveniently accessible, so that a pair of trousers may be adjusted in the trousers-hanger or clamp without removing or lifting up the coat and without taking down the hanger.
Such modifications in detail and form as may lie within the discretion or preference of the designer and mechanic may of course be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A trousers-hanger composed of a pair of sheet metal jaws or plates having medial tongues, one plate having resilient curved or approximately cylindrical extensions encompassing the upper edge and bearing on the back side of the other plate, and one plate having upper projections bearing against lips on the other plate, thereby holdmg the jaws closed and the tongues separated, one tongue serving as a means for attaching the clamp to a support, and the other serving as a handle for clamp.
2. A trousers-hanger comprising a pair of sheet metal jaws or plates, one having resilient curved extensions encompassing the upper edge and bearing upon the back of the other plate, and one plate having upper projections bearing against lips on the other opening the plate, thereby yieldingly holding the jaws closed.
3. A trousers-hanger comprising a pair of sheet metal jaws or plates constructed and assembled to provide a hinged connection, one plate having resilient extensions overlying the upper edge and bearin against the back side of the other plate and yieldingly holding the jaws closed, said jaws having medial tongues, the back one of which serves as a means for attaching the clamp to a support while the other tongue extends upwardly and forwardly and serves as a handle for opening the clamp, and a link embracing said tongues and adapted to hold the clamp open, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature,
in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM G. THATOHER.
