Description

dilated Bietet @anni djijliw.
Letters Patent No. 95,903, dated October 19, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLACK-BELT ATTACHMENT FOR MACHINERY.
Y rv- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J. W. HOWRD, of Greenville, inthe county of Butler, and State of Alabama, have invented a new and improved Slack-Belt Attachment for Gotton-Gins; andl do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof',
' which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The ligure is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved attachment.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved attachment f'or cotton-gins, to be interposed between the pulley of the gin and the driving-wheel, f to bring the belt together and into proper position before it passes to the pulley, and which shall at the same time be simple in construction, easily adjusted, and ei'ective in use; and
I t consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the attachment, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the base-frame of the device, to the ends of which are attached the posts B and C.
'.lhe attachment is placed in front of and a little below the pulley of the gin, and is secured to the frame ofthe gin by screws or bolts, which pass through holes in the board D, attached to the posts B, and into or throughl the frame of the gin.
To the upper end of the posts B is pivoted the end of the 'ame E, by a rod, F, passingthrough holes in the upper ends of the posts B, and through holes in the flame E,'so that the other end of the said frame E may be raised and lowered, as required.
The posts C are longer than the posts B, and in ltheir upper parts is formed a series of holes, c', in the arc of a circle, having the rod F for its centre.
G is a rod, which passes through holes in the frame E, and through one or the lother of the series of holes c through the posts C, according to the required ad- I is the upper or adjustable roller, the journals of which revolve in bearings attached to the adjustable or pivoted frame E, so that the rollers I H may be brought nearer together or moved further apart, as the condition ofthe belt may require, by adjusting the position of the movable end of the frame E, as herenbefore described.
In using the attachment, the belt from the top of the -drive-whee1 passes under the upper or adjustable roller I, then over and around the gin-pulley, over the lower or stationary roller H, and under the drive-wheel.
The frame-work of' the lgin and of' the attachment being made true and perpendicular, and being securely attached to each other, the rollers are always parallel with the pulley, and never get out ofa true'workingposition with respect to said pulley.
This construction also renders the adjustment .of the gin and attachment much more easy and simple, should the floor of the gin-house sag from the weight of the cotton, as frequently happens.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,1 is- The combination of loosely-pivoted lever E and pin G with the post C, having a series of holes arranged thereon, in the arc of a circle, as and for the purpose specified. Y
