Letters Patent No. 79,833, dated July 14, 1868. l
- @ille Signale nicht ir in tipa Entert. tinten mit mating nrt uf tige same.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Hoym, of Bethel', in the county of Fairfield, andAState of Connecticut, have invented n. new and useful Machine for Sizing or Feiting Hat-Bodies; and I do declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the drawings, making a part of Vthis specicatiomwhich is e.` perspective viewpwith a part of the kettle or'tub andof the main post left oii, tosh'ow the operation of the several parts. Y l
A A-is the frame`B`B is the-tub or kettle, with a part of the side 'left ofi', to show the for-u1 of the corro-- gated bede a and its operation, theV front partof the tub Blforming the plank; (Dis tholrell.of hats, rolled up g in the cigth 6, 'one end of which is attached tothe roller ciso that thecloth may be let outor taken up, as 'the work `nmty'dema-nd, 'the roller d remaining'stationary while the work is gcigen; D is a segmentalrnbber, with the'under side corrugated the same asv the bed a a, to-correspond and work with it. The arnxs e e are fastened at the top to the lshaft E, which'forins a pivot"o'n which Athe segment D1 swings, und. being kept 'in .its .proper yposition-for a--piv'otby the connecting-hars Flione end of which claspsv the pivot-shaft Eandthel counter-'shaft' H with the other end. I I are two pitinen, connecting the. arms e' e with the whcelf-cranks fon'-the "co unter .shaft H. Thecounter-shaft is drivenby-the beltg from `the driving-shaft.K,'thc speed-of the shaft.H-'being regulated by. common4 pulleys. 4 f Y l It will be seen that when the oountervshai'tf-H-.isjdriven-threeghethef-beltgironi-the a l oscillating or swinging motion will be given to the rubber D, through the pitlnonll I, and 'the roll'of liats, 0,\ will be made-to rollback vand forth between the'rubber Dand'the bed-pieces a'a. The natural inclination'nf; the roll C to unroll is prevented by the position and4 form o'f vthe bed-a a, which inclinee mostly {rom-thesrcller el, to'which the cloth In is fastenedftheV inclination of the hed a preventing the roll C from slackeningfwhen moving towards the roller d, and tightening the roll as it comes back. As the hats wantchanging and inspecting often-while .being felto'd, the. rubber yD is easily raised by the treadle L through the cords z' i; which are fastened tothe cross-bar M on the treadle L, and, passing over the pulleys t, are fastened onthe other end to the'lpivotshaft E at m m. The roll C being thus released, i's drawn' forward to the operator on the plank B, and rearranged or crozed, whenit is agaiii rolled'up in the cloth b to its position under the rubber D, the treadle M; released,
and the work again goes on. l l
I The lower part of the bod a is hinged or pivoteda't N; so the sprng'oraises the lower part oi the bed a above the water-line p when the 'weight' of the rubber D is taken off, land the roll Gis adjusted witho'utexpcsing the hands to thc hot water.
To facilitate tile-useof-tlie machiuel'in sui'all shops where they 'have-no engine .or water-power, the pitmen I I-are detached from the artn's c fr, and the handle R, which, is easily nttache'dfto the shaft E andthe rubber D, asv-seen, er by any similar device, when, by raising thc-handle Rvup and down alternately, a swing-ing motion. is given to the rubber D, -as before, As it is desirable that the rubher'D should be' thrown forward, and be let down'on the roll in that position always, 'to insure a proper working ofthe roll G inthe machine, the wire springs S S, coiled around the pivot-shaft E, with the lower ends made fast in the rubber D,with theA upper lends so made that they'can be hooked under the connecting-bars F F, as shown in the dotted lines,-`thus helping to give the vibrntory`motion to the segment or rubber D. By extending the shafts'of the handle R beyond. the shaft E, a weight may be used for the same purpose as the springs S S.. A l
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y J 1. The combination of the vibrating or swinging.segment'D,aud the.correspondingly-formed hed, a a, hinged or pivcted at N, it being elastically supported by the spring 0, substantially as herein described,` and for the purpose set forth.
2. The handlcR, shaft E, springs S S, and. swingingV segmenti), when arranged as described and for the l purpose specified." l
