RECEP'IACLE OR CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 24, 1910.
Application filed October 29, 1909. Serial No. 525,342.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES S. BARON and JAMES F. HAFFEY, of Tifiin, Seneca county, Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Receptacles and Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and use ful improvement in receptacles or containers, more especially those used in the house hold, as for salt or pepper and also to those used for toilet powder.
It relates more particularly to the means for securing the cover upon such devices.
The invention consists in providing the receptacle or container at its mouth with a seat on the inside and a groove on the outside, the cover to fit on the seat and an elastic ring to fit into the groove, as will be explained.
In the annexed drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper part of a receptacle or container provided with the invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the device with the cover up or open; Fig. 3 is an edge view of a modified form of cover; Fig. 4 represents a modification; Fig. 5 represents the elastic ring.
In these drawings, the numeral 1 represents a receptacle or container. This receptacle is provided at its top or mouth with the lug 2 and recess 3 arranged at the opposite ends of the diameter. The lug 2 is provided with two holes or recesses 4 and 5 on opposite sides. The receptacle is also made at its top with two other recesses or angular notches 6 and 7 arranged at the opposite ends of the diameter and at right angles to the lug 2 and recess 3. On the inside the receptacle has the annular seat 8. On the outside the receptacle has the annular or circumferential groove 9. This groove 9 passes around the receptacle in the line of the recesses 3, 6 and 7, and is therefore in three sections or lengths. Adapted to fit within the top of the receptacle is a lid 10 having a central portion 11 adapted in size and shape to fit within the top of the receptacle and having its edge 12 resting upon the seat 8 and two arms 13 and 14 projecting diametrically from the central portion 11 and adapted to fitsnugly within the recesses 6 and 7. The thickness of the lid 10 is such that it is flush with the top of the receptacle when the lid is down. The ends 15 and 16 of the arms 13 and 14 have grooves 17 and 18. In these grooves 17 and 18 is held the elastic ring 19. This ring is made with two ends 20 and 21 which are inserted into the holes or recesses 4 and 5 of the lug 2. The lid 10 held by the elastic ring 19, and the latter held by the lug 2, forms 2.
- hinged cover for the receptacle or container.
The recess 3-in the edge of the top of the receptacle or container readily permits the elastic ring to be caught by the finger so as to lift the cover on its hinge.
Fig. 4 shows a modification. Instead of the cover being hinged to the top of the receptacle or container, it is simply sprung down into place, the ring 19 resting in the groove 9. Also as shown in Fig. 4, the ring 19 instead of resting in the grooves in the ends 15 and 16 of the arms 13 and 14, may have its body held in the turned up ends 20 and 21 of the arms 13 and 14.
Fig. 3 shows another modification. Here the lid 22 is shown curved instead of fiat. Otherwise it is constructed the same.
This invention is adapted for use with receptacles of difi'erent material provided either with perforate or imperforate lids. As shown in Fig. 2 all except the elastic ring may be glass'or crockery. As shown in Fig. 4, the lid may be of metal. As shown in Fig. 3 the lid may be of glass or crockery or metal.
Having described our invention what we claim is:
1. A receptacle provided with a seat on the inside, a recess on its top, and a groove on the outside, in combination with a lid having a central portion adapted to the seat and an arm adapted to the recess and an elastic ring adapted to the groove on the outside of the receptacle and the ends of the arms of the lid.
2. A receptacle provided at its top with a seat on the inside, two recesses at opposite ends of a diameter, and a groove on the outside, in combination with a cover consisting of a lid having a central portion provided with arms and adapted to the seat and recesses, and an elastic ring adapted to the groove on the outside of the receptacle and the ends of the arms of the lid.
3. A receptacle provided at its top with a seat on the inside, two recesses at opposite ends of a diameter, and a groove on the outside, in combination with a cover consisting of a lid having a central portion, and arms provided with grooves, such central portion and arms being adapted to the seat and recesses, and an elastic ring held in the grooves lid the cover being hinged to the top of the of the arms and adapted to the groove on receptacle. the outside of the receptacle. In testimony whereof We have hereunto 4.
