Original application filed February 11, 1909, Serial No. 477,371.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 17, 1910.
Divided and this application filed February 5, 1910. Serial No. 542,312.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. GILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in File-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an adjustable handle for a file or other similar tools; and the object of the improvement is to provide a pair of adjustable handles on the side of the file so that the same can be positively operated with two hands.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a file with the improved handle applied thereto; Fig. 2, a cross section showing the connection between the end of one handle and the file; and Fig. 3, a cross section showing the extensible joint or connection between the two handles.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawing.
The file 1 employed to illustrate the invention is preferably of the type known as a flat file provided with mutually crossing series of teeth 2 having their cutting edges curved rearwardly from the respective edges of the file toward the opposite edges, and convexed toward the forward end of the file, as set forth and claimed in my application filed February 11, 1909, Serial No. 477,371, and matured into Letters Patent No. 944,730, issued December 28, 1909, of which the present application is a divisional part.
The adjustable handle for the side of the file is composed of the two similar members 3 and 3 which are preferably curved in a suitable manner to be conveniently grasped by the hands. The outer ends 5 and 4 of the handles are preferably flanged and are secured to the respective ends of the file, as by means of the bolts 5, the heads 6 of which are countersunk in the exposed side of the file, and the nuts 7 of which are preferably adapted to be manipulated by the fingers.
The inner ends of the handles are connected by a preferably inflexible extensible joint, and as shown this joint is made up of the elongated slide 8 formed or attached on one section of the handle, and the elongated guide 9 formed or attached on the other section; in which guide the slide is adapted to be adjusted endwise, and the joint is secured, when properly adjusted to fit a particular file, by means of the thumb screw 10.
It is evident that by providing a bolt aper ture 11 at each end of the file, with countersinks 12 on each side of the file, the handle may be applied'to either side of the file, thus leaving the other side exposed for use without any protrusions to interfere with the free operation of the same. It is also evident that the improved handle can be adjusted endwise by an extension of the joint between the sections thereof, to fit files of different lengths; and that when secured to the side of a file the same can be operated with two hands, whereby equal pressure can be imposed on each end of the file by the operator.
I claim:
1. A handle for a file or the like composed of two handle sections having the outer ends thereof secured to the end portions of the file and their inner ends connected together by an endwise extensible joint.
2. A handle for a file or the like composed of two handle sections having the outer ends thereof secured to the end portions of the file and their inner ends connected together by an endwise extensible inflexible joint.
3. A handle for a file or the like composed of two handle sections on one side of the file, bolts adapted to connect the outer ends of the handle sections to the end portions of the file, and having their heads arranged to be countersunk in the exposed side of the file, the inner ends of the handle sections being connected together by an endwise extensible joint.
THOMAS E. GILL. Witnesses:
HARRY FRnAsn, RUTH A. MILLER.
