Description

Sept. 9 1924. 1,507,645
D. is. WEDGEWORTH TOOL Filed Dec. 20, 1.922
INVENTOR WITNESS: ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 9, 1924.
1 UNITED mm Dav n s. WEDGEWORTH, or SAUQIER, MISSISSIPPI;
Toot.
Application filed December 20, 1922; Serial No 608,037
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID S. WEDGE-- WORTH, a'citizen ofthe United States, resid ing at Saucier, in the county of Harrison and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a simple, cheap and effective means for removing broken parts from steam valves, pipe sleeves, unions, ells, etc.
A further object is to produce a tool for this purpose which will grip and back out broken threaded pipe sections having either right or left hand screw threads.
To the attainment of the foregoing and other objects which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference is to be had to the drawings which accompany and which form part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the improvement,
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,,
Figure 3 is a sectional View on the line 33 of Figure l,
Figure 4 is a view looking toward one end of the device,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the blade or jaw expanding element.
My improved tool may be considered in the nature of an inside wrench, inasmuch as the same is designed to be arranged in a pipe, valve or other hollow threadedly connected members to grip and to remove broken parts therefrom.
The improvement essentially comprises a body or head portion 1, the same having its outer end square in cross section and provicled with a centrally arranged square bore 2. The squared end of the head 1 is preferably provided with a continuous outstanding flange or shoulder 4, the said shoulder, at the center of its faces, being formed with extensions in the nature of spaced ears 5. From the ears 5 the head is formed with a reduced cross sectionally rounded extension in the nature of a sleeve 6, and the said sleeve, in a line with the confronting faces of the ears, 5 is slotted, as at 7, the said slots also passing between the ears, and terminating in a line with the outer wall of the shoulder 4. The slots 7 may be arranged angula'rly with respectto "the longitudinal plane of the 'head l; I 7
Pivotally secured between each" pair of ears 5, as at 8' is 'thefwidened innerend portion 9 of blades or jaws 10, one. ofsaid jaws, of course, being received in one of the slots If desired, the openings in the jawsv through which the pivots 8 pass may be somewhat elongated, and each of the jaws has its outer face toothed or serrated, as at 11., The jaws 10 project a considerable distance beyond the tubular or sleeve end 6 of the head 1 and are of a width considerably greater than the thickness between the bore 2 and the sleeve end 6 of the head 1.
The blade expanding element is in the nature of a cross sectlonally rectangular bar which is broadly indicated by the numeral 12. The bar 12 has each of its faces fromits end that enters the bore 2 provided with the inner ends thereof, or in other words 5 the said inner edges are arranged at-an inclination. y
In operation, the jaws are moved inwardly, the expanding bar 12 being drawn partly through the bore 2 of the head 1. The
device is then inserted in a valve or pipe member in which there is a broken section. The bar 12 is moved inwardly through the bore 2, causing the jaws 10 to be swung out,- wardly, so that their toothed outer edges will tightly engage the broken pipe section. A wrench is then employed for engaging the cross sectionally rectangular bar to cause the tool as a whole to turn with the broken pipe section. The tool may be turned in either direction in accordance with the right or left hand threads which connect the broken to the unbroken pipe section. The inner edges of the jaws being received in the grooves of the barl2, are materially reinforced and sustained from. injury in the operation of the tool, and it is thought that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings will fully set forth the simplicity of the construction, the
ease of operation and the advantages of the improvement to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates.
Havingdescribed, the claim v A tool for the purpose set forth comprising a head including a- "straight end terminating in a shoulder provided with proinvention, I
jecting spaced ears on each of the faces thereof and having altubular extension beyond the ears, said extension having angle slots which pass between the spaced ears, jaw members comprising blades having widened inner ends provided with elongated openings, one of said jaws being received in each of the slots, a pivot passing between the ears and through the openings of the 'aws each of said 'aws havin its outer,
boreand having; longitudinally extending angularly disposed grooves whose inner walls are deepest at the outer ends thereof, and each of said grooves designed to receivethe inner edge of one of the jaws when the bar is moved inwardly through the head.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
