Description

' PATBNTED'IJULY 31,1906! ER.
w. I. M
WRE APPLICATION FILED FEB. 7, 1906. 5
I INVENTOR.
I A TTORNE 1/5 UNITED STATES- PATENT oF IoE.
WILLIAM I. MEASER, or H'UTOI-IIINSON, KANSAS.
' WRENCH.
' simple, inexpensive, and efiicient wrench of the character described in which the nut-en- I gaginghead is pivotall mounted foruniverr sal movement on the s ank or handle Wheieby the device may be used for manipulating nuts not accessible with an ordinary wrench. A further object of the invention is to generally improve this .class of devices so as to add to' their utility and durability as well as to reduce the cost of manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination andarrangement of parts,
2 5 hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in' the accompanying drawings, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the ap- 3o pended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of acylinder-Wrench constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a 3 5 longitudinal .sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a perspectiveview of the severalparts comprising the wrench detached;
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawpl ings.
'The improved devic'e consists of a handleor shank 5, one end of which is provided with a transverse enlargement fiilhaving a recess- ,7 formed therein, while-t e opposite end 5; thereof is bifurcated to form a pair-of spaced 7 arms 8, between which is pivotall mounted,
v as by a pin or rivet 9, the reduce extension or tongue 10 of an intermediate section 11. The section 1 1 is formed witha second tongue or extension-12, disposed at right an les to the tongue 10 and pivotally mounte on a pin or bolt 13 between the s aced arms 14 of the head 15. The arms 8 an '14 form sockets for the reception of the ton ues on the inter- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February ,7, 1906. 'Serial No. 299.9 79.
It will thus be seen that the nut-en aging i s claime is- I 'of which is provided with an enlargement 4 5'5 mediate section 11, there y strengthening,
Patented j'uly '81, 1906.
' free lateral movement of said head in mani pulating the wrench. The ends of the ton ues 10 and 12 are also preferably inclined or eveled at "19, as are likewise the ends of the arms-8 of the handle 5, so thatthe several sections com risin the wrench are free to move lateral y wit respect to each other.'
.70 head has a umversal movement there y enabling the wrench to be introduced into a cavity or recess for operating on a nut which is not accessible with an ordinary wrench. In operation the headof the Wrench is introduced within the cylinder and positioned on the nut to be removed or adjusted, after which a bar orlever is inserted in the transverse recess in the shank or handle to assist. in rotating'said handle in the act of adjusting the nut.
' Attention is called to the fact that the head 15 is detachably secured to the intermediate section, so that said head ma be quickly removed and replaced by a simi ar headhaving a larger orsmaller nut-receiving socket, as the-occasion may re uire.
While the wrench 1s especiall designed for I use in connection with thres ing-machine cylinders, it is obvious that the same. may be used with equally good results for removing and adj usting1 tire-bolts, railway-"bolts, and for various 0t er pur oses. e
Havin thus descri. 'ed the invention, what I 1. A wrench comprisin a handle having one end thereof formed wit a socket, a work-. engaging head provided with asimilar socket, and. a movable section having 0 positelydisposed tongues defining intermediate shoulders, said tongues engaging the sockets and forming a pivotal connection between the head and handle respectively, the ends of the ton uesbeing curved and spaced from the walls of the socket and the ends of the head and handle being also curved for ment with the shoulders.
' wrench comprising a handle, one end engage having a transverse recess formed therein no 1o: i l l for the reception of an opereting-tool and its 1 head and handle being also curved for enopposite end formed with a socket, a Workge ement with the shoulders. engaging head provided with asimilar socket, -n testimony that I claim the foregoing as and a movable section having oppositelymy own I have hereto aflixed my signature in 5 disposed tongues defining intermediate shoul- \thepresence of two witnesses.
ders, said tongues engaging the sockets and forming a pivotal connection between the WILLIAM M head and handle, respectively, the ends of Witnesses: the tongues being curved and spaced from JI'AMEs RANDLEs,
10 the walls of the socket and the ends of the WILLIAM H, PHARES.
