To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. OsBoRN, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamp- Presses, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to presses for small articles such as neckties, gloves, handkerchiefs, and other like articles, the object of the invention being to provide a pair of op posed plates connected by a pivoted clamp so arranged that when the clamp is turned the plates will be drawn toward each other to press the article held between them and that when turned in the other direction the plates will be detached from clamping engagement with each other and one plate may be easily and quickly removed from the other.

A further object is to provide in a press of the character described an extremely simple form of clamp for forcing the two plates toward each other.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of another form of my press. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same, the dotted lines showing the clamping lever in its unlocked position.

Referring to the figures of the drawings, 2 designates a base plate of any suitable character, preferably of wood, having a smooth upper face. This block or plate 2 is transversely grooved on its under side as at 8 for the reception of a U-shaped bail 4, the transverse arm of which is received within said groove and held therein by the U-shaped eyes which are driven into the wood and surround or partially surround the transverse rod of the bail, 4. The ends of the bail are upwardly extended as at 5 on each side of the base 2 and are then hooked or bent at right angles at their upper ends.

The upper plate 6 of the press is smooth on its under face and adapted to fit upon the upper face of the base plate 2. It is provided on its upper face with the opposed eyes 7 which pivotally support a clamping bar 8 to the upper face of the plate This Specification of Letters Patent. clamping bar has a U-shaped central portion forming a handle whereby the clamp may be turned. The lower ends of the U- shaped portion are laterally bent and pass through the eyes 7. These laterally bent ends are not exactly at right angles to the two legs of the U-shaped handle 8, but are at less than right angles thereto. In the same way, the laterally extended ends 9 are not in the same plane with the central portion 8 of the clamp, but extend forwardly. As a consequence, when the handle is r0 tated in the eyes the extremities of the clamp move upward and then rearward through the arc of a circle. Therefore, when the hooks on the ends 5 of the bail are engaged by the ends 9 of the clamp, they will be drawn. tightly upward and be solidly engaged with the clamp. The extremities of the bail, as before remarked, are hook shaped and the bends which form the hookshaped ends are slightly less than at right angles to the top of the bent ends of the bail, so that the clamp top cannot be disengaged from these hooks when it is tightened and yet disengagement with the hooks is easy when the clamp is loosened.

In Figs. 5 and 6, I have shown another form of my invention wherein 10 illustrates the lower plate of the device provided on each side with the pivoted hooks 11, these hooks having two or more hook-like slots .12. The upper plate of the press is provided. on each side with the bearings 13 for a transverse shaft 14. This shaft at its middle is provided with a clamping arm 16. Projecting from one side of the clamping arm 16 is the handle 17, and from the extremity of the clamping arm project laterally the two ends of a cross bar 18. This cross bar at its ends is adapted to engage with the hooks 11. Thus, when the handle is drawn down against the uppermost plate the cross bar 18 X ill be raised, drawing the two plates together. It will be seen that in this position the cross bar is beyond the center of the shaft 14 and that hence the arm 16 and the handle 17 will be held locked in their clamping position. hen the handle is moved in the reverse direction, the cross bar will be moved downwardly, which will permit the disengagement of the hooks 11 from the cross bar.

It will be seen that my invention is very simple, can be applied for a large number of purposes, and is a very useful article for pressing such matters of haberdashery as gloves, handkerchiefs, cravats, etc.

Having described my invention, claim is:

i 1. A clamping press comprising upper and lower solid plates, a rotatable clamping lever pivoted upon the upper face of the upper plate and having resilient laterally extending members, the said clamping lever being so formed that the said lateral extremities move away plate when the lever is turned, and hooks on the lower plate adapted to detachably engage with the extremities of the clamping lever, said hooks being pivoted to the lower plate for movement against the edges of the plate.

2. A clamping press comprising upper and lower plates, hooks on the lower plate, a handle pivoted to the upper plate, and resilient laterally extending members, the extremities of said laterally extending members being spaced from the axial center of the clamping handle and adapted to engage with said hooks.

3. A clamping press including upper and lower plates, hooks pivoted to the edges of the lower plate, and a clamping lever pivoted upon the upper plate, said lever consisting of'a handle portion and resilient laterally projecting end portions, said end portions extending out at less than right angles what I from the face of the to the handle portion and being inclined from the plane of the handle portion.

4. A clamping press comprising upper and lower plates, a bail pivoted to the bottom of the lower plate and having upwardly extending ends hooked at their extremities, and a clamp pivotally supported on the upper face of the upper plate, said clamp having a central handle member and laterally extended ends, said ends having an angle less than a right angle and extended both at an angle to the axial plane of the handle.

5. A clamping press of the character described comprising a base plate formed with a transverse groove in its bottom face, a bail pivotally supported in said groove and having its extremities upwardly turned and formed into hooks, an upper plate adapted to contact with the lower plate, eyes on the upper plate, and a clamping member composed of a handle, the lower ends of which are laterally extended and pass through said eyes for pivotal movement therein, the laterally extended ends of the clamping memher after passing through said eyes being bent slightly toward the handle of the clamp and being also bent at an inclination to the pivotal axis of the clamp.
