EXTENSIBLE CABINET.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH GAYNOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Extensible Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an extensible cabinet of novel construction, provided with iiexible sides, so that its depth may be readily increased or diminished. Means are provided for collapsing the sides to any extent desired, and to lock them against further expansion or contraction after being adjusted. y

The cabinet may be used as a wardrobe, a press, a box or for similar purposes.

In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved extensible cabinet; Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 a detail of the locking means.

The cabinet comprises essentially a rigid back 10, a rigid front 11, carrying the door 12, and foldable sides 13 connecting the back with the front. Sides 13 are composed of a flexible accordion plaited material which permits them to be readily expanded or contracted. Centered between back 1() and front 11, there is an oblong frame 14, to which the accordion plaiting is attached at or about its center. This frame is composed of hollow and slotted side rails, and if desired of a similar top rail, while the bottom rail may be solid. Frame 14: is arranged in parallelism with back 10 and front 11, and corresponds in height and width to the height and width of said back and front. To both sides of back 10 and front 11, there are pivoted near the corners thereof, arms 15, as at 16. The two opposed arms 15 of each set are apertured at their overlapping inner ends for the reception of a common screw bolt 17 engaging slot 18 of frame 14: and carrying winged nut 19. In order to admit bolts 17 into slots 1S, the face of frame 14 remains uncovered. To this effect, the foldable sides 13 are formed of a front section and of a rear section, the inner ends of which are respectively attached to the front and back of the frame. rIhe heads 20 of bolts 17 are squared and are received within the hollow rails, so that they hold the bolts against rotation. If desired, arms 15 may also be pivoted to the top of back 10 and front 11, the bolts carried by Specification of Letters Patent.

said arms engaging the top rail of frame 111. But these upper arms, when employed, should be slotted at their inner ends as at 21, so that they may freely overlap.

`When the size of the cabinet is to be re duced, nuts 19 are slackened and arms 15 are moved inward with their free ends, until the sides of the cabinet have been folded to the extent desired. The mits are then tightened up to lock the cabinet in its newly assumed position. A reverse operation will cause the size of the cabinet to be increased, as will be readily understood.

The interior of the cabinet may bc adapted for the particular' use to which the cabinet is to be put. Thus, if it is to be used as a wardrobe, hooks 22 may be secured to its back 10 and also to the top rail of frame 14, as shown. But it is obvious that the interior fitting of the cabinet may be differently arranged if desired.

1. An extensible cabinet comprising a front, a back, flexible top, bottom and side members connecting the front and back, a frame intermediate the front and back and having connection with said top, bottom and side members, upper and lower sets of side arms pivoted to the front and back, means pivotally connecting the inner ends of the arms of each set to the sides of said intermediate frame, sets of arms connecting the front and back at their upper edges, the inner ends of the arms of each set being slotted, and means operating through the slotted ends of said arms and having connection with the top of the intermediate frame whereby the front and back have adjustment toward and away from each other.

2. An extensible cabinet comprising a front, a back, flexible top, side and bottom members connecting the front and back, a frame intermediate the front and back and having connection with said flexible members, a pair of arms pivoted to the back at the upper edge thereof, a pair of arms pivoted to the front at its upper edge, each arm having' a slot, and means operating through the slots on opposite arms of each pair and having connection with the top of said intermediate frame whereby the front and back may be adjusted toward and away from each other.

3. An extensible cabinet comprising a front, a back, fiexible top, bottom and side members connecting the front and top, a

frame intermediate the front and back and having connection with said lexible members, a pair of arms pivoted to the back at the upper edge thereof, a pair of arms pivoted to the front at its upper edge, each arm having a. slot, opposite arms of each pair overlapping each other, means passed through the slots of the overlapping arms and having connection with the upper edge of said intermediate frame, a pair ot arms pivotally connected to each side edge of the back, a pair of arms pivotally connected to each side edge of the front, the arms that are pivotally connectedto the sides of the front and back having their inner ends overlapping, and means connected to the overlapping parts of said arms and having connection with the sides of said intermediate frame whereby the front and .back may be adjusted toward and away from each other.

It. An extensible cabinet comprising a front, a back, flexible top, bottom and side members connecting the front and back, a frame intermediate the front and back and having connection with said flexible members, slotted arms pivotally secured to the upper edge of the back, slotted arms pivotally connected to the upper edge of the Jfront and overlapping the first mentioned arms, means passed through the overlapping portions of said arms and having connection with the top of said intermediate frame whereby the front and back may be adjusted toward and away from each other, a pair of arms pivotally secured to each side edge of the back, a pair of arms pivotally secured to each side edge of the front and overlapping the arms that are pivoted to the sides of the back, and means passed through the overlapping portions of the last mentioned arms and having connection with the sides of the intermediate frame to permit of adjustment of the front and back toward and away from each other.

5. An extensible cabinet comprising a front, a back, flexible top, bottom and side members connecting the front and back, a frame intermediate the front and back, the members which form the frame being hollow and slotted, arms pivoted to the front and back, bolts carried by said arms and having squared heads that are movable within the hollow members which form the frame, the bodies of the bolts projecting through the slots of the members which Jform the frame, and nuts for clamping the bolts to the arms whereby the front and back may be adjusted toward and away from each other.

6. An extensible cabinet comprising a front, a baclr, flexible top, bottom and side members connecting t-he front and back, a hollow frame intermediate the front and back, the hollow frame having a slot in its top and upper and lower slots in each of itssides, arms pivoted to the front and back at the upper edges thereof, bolts carried by said arms and having squared heads that are movable within the top portion of the hollow frame and which project through the slot at the top of the latter, nuts for clamping said bolts to said arms, upper and lower arms pivoted to the front and back at the sides thereof, bolts carried by the upper arms and having squared heads that are movable within the sides of the hollow frame and which project through the upper slots of the sides of the latter, nuts for clamping the last mentioned bolts to said arms, bolts carried by said lower arms and having squared heads that are movable within the hollow frame and which project through said lower slots, and nuts for clamping the last mentioned bolt to said lower arm.

7. An extensible cabinet comprising a front, a back, an intermediate frame arranged in parallelism therewith and having exteriorly accessible slots, foldable sides connecting the trame to the front and baclr respectively, arms pivoted to the front and back, bolts carried by the arms and engaging the frame slots, and means for clamping the bolts to the frame.
