Be it known that I, JosErH S. DUNCAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Type-Holders, of which therefrom.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating one embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a side view of the type holder. Fig. 2 is a front view of the type holder.

Referring to the drawings, 6 designates generall the type holder which is made of a'strlp of metal shaped to form a type groove 7 having a bottom 8, a high side 9., a low side 10, and a flange 11. I have illustrated castmetal type 12 having a projection or offset 13, the top of whlch preferably lies at a right angle to the side of the type. The flange 11 extends at a right angle to the side 10 of the holder to overlap the top 13' of the shoulder or offset 13.

The type and type groove are proportioned so that the type may be easily moved in the type groove and for this reason it is essential to provide some means to hold the type in place in the groove especially when the holder is sustained. normally in an inclined position, as indicated in Fig. 1. This is the position of a holder in the type setting case set forth in myiapplication No.

480,596, filed March 1, 1909, when the case is in position for use, the type being re moved from .the holder at the lower end thereof.-

The side 9 of the holder is provided at its lower end with ,a yielding section 14 which comprises a bow or bent portion in a spring metal plate 15, the bow projecting through an opening 16 in said side. This bow forms a yielding stop to sustain the line of type in the groove and to hold the other type in the groove-while'the lowest type in the line is bein removed. The plate 15 may be secured on the holder in any suitable manner and the bow ma be made in an. suitable way to form a yielding stop whici projects into the type groove for the purpose described. Inthe drawings I have shown the side 9 of the holder provided with. a 'plurality of openings 17 and also with lips 18 stamped up from said side. The ends of the metal plate are engaged with said lips and the upper-portion of the plate passes in through one opening 17 and under a section 19 of the side 9 and out of the next opening 17. This securely holds the upper portion of the metal plate on the holder and prevents the bodily movement of said portion relative to the holder under the pressure applied to the bow in removing the type from the holder.

The yielding stop 14 will sustain the line of type thereon when the holder is in an inclined osition and will prevent the type from accldentally slipping out of the holder endwise at any time. The stop will yield sufiiciently under slight pressure to permit the removal of thetype from the holder and this is usually done by graspingthe type with a pair of tweezers and forcing it downward past the stop, the latter yielding laterally to permit the passage of the type. The upper end of the type closed by a s1ug20 which, 1n conjunction with the yielding stop 14 at the lower end of the holder, will slipping outof the older endwise in any position at any time. I may provide a duplicate of the yielding stop 14 at the upper end of the holder instead of the slug 20, if desired. I prefer'to cut away the 9 groove may be prevent the type from tates the insertion and removal of' type from the holder.

\Vhile I have referred to the use of my improved type holder in a type setting case covered by my application heretofore mentioned, it willbe understood that the invention is capable of use in other ways and with the same desirable results.
