SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,238, dated April 5, 1892.

Application filed July 16, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN M. VAN ORDEN, of New York city, New York, have invented an Improved Inhaler, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an inhaler of improved construction, and more particularly to an improved catch and cover for closing the box.

It consists in the various features of improvement more fully pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front View of the inhaler; Fig. 2, a horizontal section on line a; at, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a side view thereof; and Fig. 4, a vertical longitudinal section on line y y, Fig. 2.

The letter 0 represents a sheet-metal pan or box provided with a yoke at, having eyes a to receive a string 12, so that it may be tied over the face beneath the nose to be used as an inhaler. The pan has a perforated surrounding fiange 0', provided at the back with two forwardly-projecting lugs 0 At the front the pan has a forwardly and upwardly projecting lip 0 Between the lugs c a stop 0 is secured to the pan, as shown.

In order to close the pan and confine the saturated exhaling material, I employ a lid (1, that projects in front over the pan edge, so as Serial No. 399,743. (No model.)

to provide a hole or tip d for the fingers. Within the tip the lid is provided with a semi-annular slot, that forms an inner partlydetached semicircular lip 61 To close the lid upon the pan, the rear edge of the lid is slipped under the lugs c to rest upon the stop 0 The forward end of the lid is then forced down, so that the lip 01 springs behind the lip 0 Fig. 4, to tightly lock the lid in place and effectively confine the contents of the pan. slight upward push against the tip (1' will suffice to disconnect the lid.

I claim- 1. In an inhaling or analogous device, the combination of pan 0, having forwardly-projecting lip 0 with a lid (1, having a semi-annular slot, a tip d, and an inner partly-detached lip d adapted to engage lip 0 substantially as specified.

2. In an inhaling or analogous device, the combination of pan 0, having forwardly-projecting lugs 0 stop 0 and a forWardly-projecting lip 0 with a lid having a semi-annular slot, atip d, and an inner partly-detached lip d adapted to engage lip 0 substantially as specified.
