Be it known that I, PABLO PARIS, a citi? zen of the Republic of Venezuela, and resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in rll`ype, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved form of type for use in printing generally, but especially adapted for use in connection with type setting machines, particularly those operated by a key-board to set up type for the class of machines that produce facsimile letters, and which are sometimes known as multigraph machines. One of the objects of the invention is to provide a form of type that can be readily carried or supported in a suitable type tube in a series, adapted to be placed in atype setting machine, wherein upon the type being advanced by suitable selecting means, it will be very easily inserted in a platen or form, by the selecting and advancing means.

A further object of the invention is to provide a special form of type whereby one of its sides will be engaged by a special form of type tube, to retain the type in the tube with the character-bearing side separated from the adjacent wall ofthe tube, to protect the character. A further object is to provide such a form of type with a channel on one side face, to facilitate the separation of the type, and advancement when placed in a series, in a type-setting machine.

Another object of this invention is to provide an improved form of type tube, especially adapted to engage and retain the said form of type.

Fig. 3 shows in perspective the type tube containing the type. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the type and type tube; Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the type and type tube, with one end of the tube partly broken to show the type, and Fig. 6 shows the type as held in a special platen.

As set forth in the drawing, the type has lthe character-bearing end 7, containing any desired character, preferably in relief, such as the letter l as shown at 8. The end opposite the type-bearing end, is made of Specification of Lettera Patent.

wedge form, preferably having a beveled face, as shown at 9.

The type is provided on one face with a groove at an :intermediate part, extending transversely across the type. As shown the type extends rearward from the character bearing end 8, in a rectangular form, as at 10, and a transverse groove 11 is provided on this face. The beveled face 9 preferably extends up to the groove 11, and as'shown, is of less thickness adjacent the groove than the said rectangular portion 10 of the type body. The two opposite sides 12 and 13 of the type body are preferably parallel and perpendicular to the flat bottom wall 14 of the type. But the end 15 of the wedge portion is preferably slightly rounded-oil as shown and for this purpose the bottom wall 14 is curved up slightly at this end.

A. special form of type tube is designed to form a holder for this form of type, and as shown is formed of a strip of sheet metal of tubular shape, that is bent over and has the longitudinal edges separated. This type tube has a flat wall 16 on one side, with one of the sides bent back, as at 17, at an angle somewhat similar to the angle of the wedge end of the type; and the edge portion of this bend is turned downward toward the wall 16 at an abrupt angle, as indicated at 18. rthe purpose of this bend 18 is to enter the groove 11 in the type, and as the type tube is of `spring metal, this will serve to press the flat bottom face 14 of the type, against the wall 16 of the tube, as best shown in Fig. 4. 1t will be noted that the bend 18 extending into the groove 11, serves to hold the beveled wall 9 slightly offset from the adjacent wall 17 of the type tube.

At the opposite side of the type tube, it is first bent upwardly as at 19, and then bent over parallel with the base 16 to forma top wall 20. lt will be observed from Fig. 4t that the upright wall 19 is slightly olset from the character on this end of the type, and the top wall 20 may also be spaced from the opposing face of the type. This is caused by the bend 18 of the type tube being pressed into the transverse groove 11 of the type body, and held there by the resiliency of the tube. This will serve to thoroughly protect the character on the end of the type from damage by engagement with the wall of the type tube, not only while being carried in the type tube, but when advanced longitudinally 4 to ,fill the tube, and also to remove the type from such holder into vthe type-setting machine, or other place of use.

It will be seen from Figs. 3 and 5 that these type are placed in a series in the type tube, and are put in one end and slid along through the tube.l For the purpose of retaining the type from endwise movement except when desired, l .provide a spring strip 2l secured to the outside of the top wall 20, with the end portion 22 extending downward through an aperture 23 in the tube. The projecting portion will engage Vthe end type as indicated in Fig. 5 and prevent itsremoval from the tube. lVhen it is required to take out the type the strip is bent upwardly, and slightly turned to hold it out of the tube as indicated in Fig. 5.

lFVhere type of this character are placed in a series, in a type-setting machine, it is often desirable to cause the type to be placed Bndwise, in a'tubular holder, to feed the end type successivelyinto a guide-way for the purpose of advancing the same to a platen or form. Such type are sometimes controlled 4by means of a slide that engages the end type, and prevents its advancement except at' the proper stage. To facilitate such operation I provide the ltype with a channel or slot 24 on one side, that is shown as beveled, the bottom of the channel extend ing up to merge into .the side wall. This will facilitate the entrance of a beveled retaining bend, between each adjacent type.

` In Fig. 6 is shown a portion of a special platen or holder, in which av number ot angle plates 26 are placed in a trame 25 and 'have av small hook 27 arranged to enter the groove 11 in the type. `These angle plates move upward when the beveled end 9 of vthe type is inserted vto permit the hook portion of the plate to enter the groove. This will also permit removal of any individual type by simply grasping the type and drawing it forward, as the hook portion will release the type at the groove. v

3. A type having a sharp wedge end, one side extending in a plane unbroken surface to the wedge end, the opposite side having a transverse groove at the middle part, said grooved side being beveled from the groove to the wedge end et the type,

A type having one side extending in a plane unbroken surface, the opposite side having a transverse groove at the middlt` part, said grooved side being beveled from the groove to the rear end of the type to provide a sharp wedge, the beveled portion adjacent the groove being of less thickness than the type beyond the groove.

5. A type having one side extending in a plane unbroken surface, the opposite side having a transverse groove at the middh` part, said grooved side being beveled from the groove to the rear end ot the type, the. type being provided with a slot on one side extending up from the bottom edge.

6. A type having one side extending in a plane unbroken surface, the opposite side having a transverse groove at the middle part, said grooved side being beveled from the groove to the rear end of the type, the type being provided with a slot on one side extending up from the bottom edge with the bottom beveled up Jfrom the base to merge into the side face.

k7. A type member provided with a. slot on one side extending up from the bottom edge with the bottom beveled up from the base to merge into the. side face, and the latter having a comparatively narrow groove and beveled downwardly to 'form a sharp wedge.
