Lette-s Paten No. 95,615, dated october 5, isch.
rMPRovEMEN-r IN THE snnfnvns or'ovnncoATs, am.
The Schedulel referredjo these LetteraPatent and mking part o! vthe same.
To all whom Iit may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH STEINHAUSER, of Lancaster, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement on Sleeves for Overcoats; and I do hereby declare 'that the followingis a full, clear, and exacty description thereof, `reference being had to the accompanying dramngs, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure. l shows a sleeve, with my improvement in plat-o. l
.Figure 2A illustrates the application of the same.v
Figure 3 shows it also on a coat, with the arm extended.
lhe nature of my invention consists in providing a cout, or outer garment having sleeves, with a pocket in 'one or both, for the receptionl and protection of the hund ot' a walking-companion.
To enable anyone skilled in the art to make and utilize my invention, it is only necessary to inspect the drawings, which clearly indicate the position of the pocket and inode of use.
lt is the common experience that when a lady cornpaniou takes the. arm of a gentleman, her hand, cov- .ered with ordinary thin gloves, is exposed to the ineleineney of the weather, and when the arm is passed Iround, so as to enable the lady to protect her hand in rho nmii' she may curry, it gives heran awkward position, Vand which is not' only tiresome, but impedes the euse and grace of her motions, so much so as to oftentimes induce the abandonment of the aid the gentlemaus arm might abrd her in passing through crowded thoroughfu'es, or overslippery sidewalks, 'c.
` To remedy this-evil, and to provide a means of protection to the. hand ofthe lady, while resting upon the arm of her escort, I have contrived a pocket under the arm, above the elbow, in the sleeve of a gentlemans outer garment, in such a manner that the lady can slip lier hand into this pocket (on either arm) and grasp the gentiemans arm, with her hand fully protected.
This pocket is-out of the way or sight, and doesyin uo way'interfere with the free use of the arm. `Being closed by a button, it 'in no way disarranges the shape of the sleeve.
This pocket might be utilized for other purposes, but the object of the invention is to provide a protection for the hand of a lady, or other one associated in Walking together. 1
I am aware that the invention maybe deemed a simple one, but Will none the less be appreciated by every one who hasin view the comfort of lady cornpanions, for Whom it will be both 'convenient anda useful protection.
I am not aware tha-t such an improvement was ever before known.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure A- coat 4having; one or both sleeves provided with a Witnesses J No. M. Ammo, FRANK J STErsHAUsEn."
