lTJNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MURPHY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN sKlPFiNG-Rons.
Specification forming part of Leters Patent No. 148,489, dated March 10, 1874; application filed January 28, 1874.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MURPHY, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Skipping-Rods; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- .Figure l is a perspective of a child with skipping-rod. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of ball on rod 5 Fig. 3, an elevation of rod with handles and ball or block.
The nature of my invention consists in the viz., to add weight to the middle portion, so as to enable it to be swung around readily. A further use for the ball is to protect the rod from being worn away by contact with the ground.
I have shown the ball constructed with a circular opening in its center, enabling it to slide readily or turn upon the rod; but I reserve the privilege of applying it in any other manner, or afixing it to the rod, so that it will have neither a sliding nor a rotary motion thereon.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The skipping-rod A, having a ball or block loosely swiveled thereon, and arranged to slide automatically to the center, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a skipping-rod having swiveled handles B and a loosely-swiveled self-adjusting block C, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of January, l874.
