CLOTH-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BURTON A. SPINNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlantic, in the county of Cass and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cloth-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to cloth holders and more particularly to a device of that class for use in dish washing, scrubbing etc., the object of my invention being to provide a holder which is adjustable to enable it to grip cloths of difl'erent sizes, and to which such cloths may be easily and quickly applied and as easily and quickly removed.

I11 accomplishing this object I- have pro vided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I is a perspective view of a cloth holder constructed according .to my invention. Fig. II is a sectional view of the handle, showing the manner of fixing the handle arms. Fig. III is an enlarged end view of the clamp sleeve.

Referring more in detail to the parts 11 designate the holder arms which are preferably formed of a single piece of spring wire, bent upon itself to provide a single anchoring shank 2. The end of each arm is tapered to a point and turned inwardly to provide the barbs 3 for gripping a cloth. Attached to each of the arms, near the outer end, is a bracket 4, comprising a pair of wire members 5. Each of said members has an attaching head 6 bent back parallel with the body portion, and a barb shank 7 bent back between the body 5 and head 6. The end of the shank 7 is turned inwardly and sharpened to provide the barb 8, and the outer end of the body is tapered to a point and bent inwardly to provide the barb 9. The bodies of the bracket wires terminate in line with the ends of the arms 11 so that the barbs 3 and 9 will extend in transverse alinement.

The wire members 5 of each bracket are mounted on opposite sides of the arms l--]. and are attached thereto by the clamps 10, the joint being preferably soldered to obviate turning of the brackets on the arms.

11 designates the handle, which is preferably constructed of wood and has a socket 12 for receiving the arm shank 2. The handle is provided with an offset neck 13 upon which a collar 14 is mounted. The outer end of the collar projects beyond the end of the neck 13 to form the sleeve socket 15 and has a head 16 at its free end. The outer end of the collar is also provided with a number of slots 17 in order that it may spread to receive the clamp sleeve 18. Sleeve 18 is slidable on the arms and is of suflicient interior diameter to allow the arms to spread. It has a head 19 at the end opposite the handle to enable it to be more easily gripped, and has a cap 20 covering its outer end and secured rigidly to its body. In cap 20 is a slot 21 through which the arms l-l are projected, the slot being extended across the cap so that the arms may move toward or from each other although held against lateral movement. It is apparent that by sliding the sleeve 18 outwardly along the arms, the latter will be moved together to cause an article to be gripped between the brackets 4t, and that by sliding the sleeve back on the arms the latter are released so that their spring tension will cause them to spread apart sufliciently for the article to be removed from the brackets. In the cap 20 is a second slot 21 which is shorter than slot 21, in order that the arms may have less play when located therein, than when located in the slot 21. The action of the sleeve on the arms is the same in either combination.

In using the device, a cloth is placed between the brackets 4, and the arms closed by moving the sleeve 18 outwardly thereover, the barbs 3, 8 and 9 entering the cloth to positively hold same in position. When the sleeve is moved forwardly, the thin edge of the cap 20 will bind against the arms and hold them together, the frictional contact also preventing the sleeve from slipping back on the arms.

When the device is not in use or the cloth is of such thickness that it may be held with out the aid of the sleeve, the latter may be moved back into the collar 14: and retained therein by the frictional contact with the leaves thereof.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. A cloth holder comprising arms formed from a single piece of spring wire, bent upon itself and provided with end barbs, and a bracket mounted on each of said arms and provided with barbs, for the purpose set forth,

The combination with a handle, having an end socket, of arms, formed from a single piece of spring wire bent upon itself and provided with facing end barbs, the bent ends of the arms being seated in the handle socket, brackets carried by said arms and provided with facing barbs, and a clamp sleeve slidable on said arms.

3. A cloth holder comprising arms, having facing end barbs; a bracket carried by each of said arms, comprising head members adapted to lie against the arms, and

body members having end barbs; and clamps embracing the bracket heads and their carrying arms.

4. A cloth holder comprising a handle, a collar carried by and extended from one end of said handle, the free end of the collar being slotted to permit it to spread, arms anchored in said handle and extending through said collar, and a sleeve slidable on said arms.

5. In a cloth holder, a handle, a collar carried by said handle and having slots in its outer end, arms carried by said handle and projected through said collar, and a sleeve slidable on said arms, said sleeve being provided with an end cap having slots of unequal length, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
