PROTECTING DEVICE FOR STRAP-HINGES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANZ J. PROSHINSKA, a subject of Vilhelm the Second, Emperor of Germany, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protecting Devices for Strap- Hinges, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to means for preventing unauthorized removal of straphinges and analogous devices from doors or other parts on which they are applied and its object resides in the provision of a contrivance which while covering the hinge perpetually so as to prohibit the removal of the screws, nails and other means by which it is secured, will in no way interfere with its movement or with that of the door, gate or lid to which said hinge is fastened. I attain this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated and in which,

Referring to the drawings by numerical reference characters, let the numeral 5 designate the door, (3 the door-post upon which it is hung and T the strap-hinge connecting the two. The latter is, as usual composed of two members 8 and 9 whose axially alined knuckles are connected by a pin 10, and which are secured to the door and to the sash by means of rivets 12, screws, nails or other fastening means.

The protective appliance is designated by the numeral 13 and consists of three pivot ally connected plates 14, 15 and 16 the width of which equals or exceeds that of the straps S and 9 of the hinge. The three plates are connected by means of pintles 17 inserted through knuckles at their adjoining ends, and the protruding ends of these pintles are clenched to prevent their withdrawal. The

end plate 14 of the appliance has at each end knuckles which correspond with similar ones at the outer edge of the strap 8 of the hinge and a pintle 18, the protruding ends of which are clenched to hold it in position, is employed to pivotally connect the protective Specification of Letters Patent. appliance with the hinge. The opposite end plate 16 which exceeds the others in length, is formed at its outer edge, with inturned teeth 19 which are driven into the surface of the door to which said plate is rigidly secured, by means of a bolt 20 inserted through an opening 21 in the latter and a therewith. reg-i istering hole in the door. The bolt may be secured in place by means of a nut 22 applied at the inside of the door, or its protruding extremity may be clenched if so desired. Then the door is in the closing po sition the three connected plates extend parallelly and in close proximity to the outer surface of the hinge straps, completely concealing them and covering the screws of rivets 12 so as to positively prevent their removal or destruction. When the door is opened as is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the plates lt and 15 will move about the pintle which connects them to each other and about those which connects them, respectively with the strap of the hinge 7 and with the rigid end member 16, without interfering with the movement of the door in either direction.

While I have shown and described my invention in the best form now known to me, it will be understood that changes in the form and arrangement of the parts may be resorted towithout departing from its principle. The member 14: may, for example, be pivotally connected with the door-post,by means of a fourth plate 23 as has been shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, instead of being fastened to the strap of the hinge.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a strap hinge whose straps are apertured for the reception of screw heads, of a flexible appliance adapted to extend over the said straps so as to entirely cover the said apertures, the said appliance being pivotally connected at one of its ends with one of the straps and having at its opposite end means whereby it may be fastened to a door independent of the said hinge.

2. The combination with a strap hinge whose straps are apertured for the reception of screw heads, of an appliance composed of pivotally connected plates adapted to extend over the said straps so as to entirely cover their apertures, an outer one of the said plates being pivotally connected with the strap of said hinge and the opposite plate having means whereby it may be fastened I to a door independent of said hinge.

3. The combination With a support, a door and a strap hinge connecting the'latter with said support, of an appliance normally covering the latter and including two pivotally connected plates, pivotally attached at their outer extremities upon said support and upon said door at distances from the I pivotal axis of said hinge, respectively equal I to the lengths of the opposite plates. 1

4c. The combination With a support, a 1 door and a strap hinge connecting the latter with said support, of an appliance composed 1 adapted to extend adjacent each edge of the respective hinge-straps.
