DAVIS. WEINSTOCK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING DISPLAY-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 12, 191e.
Application filed December 1, 1909. Serial No. 53,813.
T o all 'whom it 'may concern:
Bc it known that I, DAvIs WEINs-TOCK, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York city, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Display-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide improved folding display cases or analogous articles wherein the bottom, Ysides and top may be folded in compact form to avoid danger of breakage, and particularly wherein the vario-us parts are made of glass bound by suit-able frames, and whereby the case may be readily opened for use and retained in a secure position.
My invention comprises novel details of improvement and combinations of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein,
Figure 1 is a side view of a display case or box embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the same folded; Fig. 3 is a plan view of one edge of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a detail view, Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5, 5, in Fig. l; Fig. G is a side view of a modified form of the box; Fig. 7 is a view of the same folded, and Fig. 8 is a detail view of a corner of the box looking from the left in Fig. 6.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The display case or box is provided with a suitable bottom 1, sides 3 and 1, ends 5, and top G, suitably hinged together. Bottom 1 may be ofsheet metal or other suitable material, and the sides, ends and top may be made of glass panels having bindings of sheet metal 7 formed in any well known manner, or said parts may be of any suitable material.
In Figs. 1 to 5 the sides 3, t, and the ends 5 are hinged to bottom 1, the hinges 8 for the sides being raised suliiciently high from bottom 1 to enable the ends 5 to fold down upon bottom 1 while the sides 3, t, fold upon the ends 5. (See Fig. 2.)
In Figs. 6, 7 and 8 the sides 3, 4, are hinged at 8 to bottom 1 in such manner that side 4L will fold under bottom 1 and side 3 will fold upon bottom 1, the bottom and side 4 being swung relatively toside 3. (See Fig. 7.) In this case the ends 5 are hinged to side 3 at its opposite ends by hinges 9, so that t-he ends 5 fold upon side 3. In either case, when the parts are extended and set upas in Figs. 1 and 6 a rectangular display case or box is formed. It is designed that the top 6, when the case or box is folded, will lie upon the other folded parts substantially within the area of the latter, and not project at its sides materially beyond the other parts, which would be the case were top 6 hinged to side 3 without also having relative movement or adjustment with respect thereto.
In Figs. 1 to 5 the side 4 is sho-wn of greater height than side 3, yet by my improved form of hinge the top 6 may fold flat upon the other parts of the case or box without projecting materially beyond the same. To such end I provide hinges 10, which, in the form shown, comprise swinging wires suitably bent and sha ed, the upper lateral projecting parts 1()EL o which wires are journaled in keepers or eyes 11, which are suitably attached to cover 6, while the lower laterally bent ends 10b of the wires 'are journaled in keepers l2 suitably attached to the outersurface of side 3, the swinging wire hinges thus being exterior to side 3. From this it will be understood that when` the case or box is set up the hinges 10 will swing relatively to the part-s 3 and 6 to assume the position shown in Fig. 1, and when the case or box is collapsed or folded the hinges 10 will swing as shown in Fig. 2, thereby enabling the cover 6, instead of being projected outwardly materially beyond the area of the other folded parts, (which would occur were the cover hinged directly at the upper edge of side 3) to be folded directly over the other folded parts, asin Fig. 2. Suitable means may be provided for retaining the sides in relative positions when set up. For this purpose I have shown spring clips 14, shown carried by the side t and by the hinge wires 10, adapted to engage keepers or sockets 15 on the ends 5. Thus, when the parts are set up and the clips 14 engage the keepers 15 the sides and ends will be rmly united, and they may be readily separated, and as clips 14E are attached to the hinged wires 10 the latter are retained in position and also retain side 3 in position, as in Fig. 1. Vith the arrangement shown the ends 5 lie between the sides 3, t which fold against the vertical edges of said ends, and the cover G rests over or upon the ends as well as upon :man:
the sides. The cover may be readily swung up and down upon the hinge parts 10"L when the case or box is set up. To retain the cover in an upwardly rearwardly inclined position I provide the hinged wires 10 with bent extended portions 10c against which the adjacent edge of cover 6 will rest when raised.
In Figs. 6, 7 and 8 insteadof hinge members l0 having relative swinging movement with respect to side 3, said members have sliding movement with respect thereto. The upper ends of hinge wires 10 are pivotally connected with keepers 11 carried by cover 6, as before explained, and are shown provided with the extended portions 10c to keep cover 6 in an inclined position, but the lower parts of hinge wires 10 slide in the keepers 12 attached to side 3, the lower bent ends 10"1 of wires 10 serving to prevent the wires from `being pulled ont of the keepers. In this case, when the case or box is to be collapsed or folded the hinge wires 10 are pulled outwardly through the keepers 12 which enables the cover 6 to be adjusted in proper position over the other folded parts of the case or box, as illustrated in Fig. 7. l/Vhen the case or box is set up, the wires 10 are pushed down through keepers 12 to enable the cover to rest properly upon the sides and ends, as shown in Figs. 6 and 8. In said gures I have shown the clips or catches 14 as carried by ends 5 and the keepers 15 as carried by side f1, which arrangement may also be adopted in Figs. 1 to 5, or the arrangement of clips 14eand keepers 15 of the last named figures may be adopted in the construction of Figs. G, 7 and 8.
While I have shown the hinge members 10, 11, 12 as connected with side 3, it will be understood that said hinge members can be connected with either of the sides or with either of the ends, if preferred, the various parts being suitably shaped for the purpose.
My invention is not limited to the details of construction and arrangements of parts set forth, as the same may be varied, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having now described my invention what I claim is:
1. A display case or box having foldable bottom, sides, ends and cover, means for retaining said parts set up, hinges extending upwardly from the bottom and pivotally connected to the sides above the bottom to permit the -sides to fold upon the folded ends,`and hinge members pivotally connecting the cover and a side, said hinge members having relative movement with respect to said side and cover.
2. A display boX or case having foldable bottom, sides, ends and cover, means for retaining said parts set up, and hinge members pivotally connected with the cover and adjustably connected with one of the sides to have relative movement with respect thereto, and means to adjustably retain said hinge members in position to permit the cover to swing without swinging said hinge members.
3. A display case or box having foldable bottom, sides, ends and cover, means for retaining said parts set np, and hinge members pivotally connected with the cover and pivotally connected with one of the sides, and means to adjustably retain said hinge members in position to permit the cover to swing without swinging said hinge members.
4C. A display case or box having foldable bottom, sides, ends and cover, means for retaining said parts set up, and hinge members pivotally connected with the cover and pivotally connected with o-ne of the sides, said hinge members being provided with securing devices, and complemental securing' devices on the ends to coact with the first named secnrin g devices.
5. A display case or box having foidable bottom, sides, ends and cover, means for ree taining said parts set up, hinge members pivotally connecting the cover and a side,
and means tofadjnstably retain said hinge members upon said side, said hinge members having relative movement with respect to said side and cover, said hinge members having extensions to engage the cover when it is open to support the cover in the open position.
6. A folding' case orfbox having a bottom, sides, and ends hinged to the bottom, a cover, hinges pivot-ally connected to the cover and pivotally connected to one of the sides to swing relatively thereto and means to adjustably retain said hinge members to said sides to permit the cover to swing when the parts are set up.
7. A display case or box having foldable members, hinge members movably connect ed with two of the first named members and having relative movement with respect thereto, and means to retain said hinge members in position to permit the cover to swing without moving the hinge members.
