To all whom it may coment: Y
Be it linoivn that l, "i, rLiirLrr .niinn, a
citizen ot' the German Empire, and resident- The present invention comprises a lool:
for connecting up the ends of chains tor securing cattle in the stall or shed or tor mooring boats or similar purposes. its object is to provide a secure attachment, which can be easily and quickly detached.
ln the accompanying drawings Figure l represents a view ot the device seen 1from underneath, With the locking spring disengaged, but with the chainl holding' eye still. in its closed position. VFig. 2 is a side elevation with the parts in the same position as in F l. Fig. 3 is a view seen trom underneath with the locking spring and lever removed and Fig. Ll is an end view ot the device seen from the right hand end ot Fig. 3 with the parts locked in position.
rllhe device consists ot a housing ci et Llshaped cross section and having a double top n between which and the top proper the two members Z l oit the split eye 7) are mounted on a pivot g connecting the same pivotally and adapted to slide in the slots 0 and y) of the said double top. rlhese members (Z CZ are provided at their adjacent edges with inclined recesses 1 r tapering toward the pivot g and embracing between them a conically shaped stud s extending dovvn- Wardly from the top of the housing c and tapered to correspond substantially with the taper of the recesses r r.
rlhe under surfaces et the members el (Z are provided with transverse grooves z 7L, which, when the members ot the eye I) are closed, are in alinement, and are adapted to be arrested in alinement and in their closed position by means of a cam termed on the upper' surface ot an arresting lever e, pivotally mounted at g between the tivo side Walls of the housing o. rlhis lever carries at its under side the locking spring j ot the device, which is pivotally attached to the said lever at z' and is adapted to engage under a hook t fixed in one Wall of the housing a. when the device is locked. rllhe lever e is further provided with an arm carrying a Weight mI adapted, when the locking spring has been released to disengage the cam y from the grooves L L by turning the lever e on its Specification of Letters Patent.

rihe end of the housing pi votg by gra vitv tast theretov tor is provided with an eye o the other end ot the chain. i The device operates in the tollon'ingniannem-@ne end ot the chain is attached to the eye o and the other to the detachable ye l). lVhen the ends or' the chain are connected up the parts are in the position shown in Fin'. l, with the excejation that the loclsing spring is turned iinvardly and engages, with its orifice under the hooli z. ln order to disengage the partsv` the tree end ot the locking springis depressed and dise outwardly on its pivot z' a nose termed on the opposite end oft the spring slides along a cam surface Z 'formed on onel ot the side Yells oi" the housing c, (Fig. 2) and. as the 'weight ym. acts by gravity` the said spring is turned aside bythe cooperation oit the cam l and nose ,7n and the cam ot the lever c is thereby brought out ot engagement with the grooves /L 72. ot.' the members (Z d. 'thus released7 the pull on the chain end held b v the split eye o pulls the pivot f/ along the slots 0 y; and simultaneously the tapered pin or stud s Yforces the members d el apart and opens the eye l) as clearly shown at Fig. 3. To loclr the device the chain end is reinserted in the split eye Z) and the parts pushed baelr into the housing, when the locking spring is again closed under its hook t.
I claim my invention:
l. A device tor connecting chain ends together7 consisting of a housing having an eye or link ttor one end of the chain, a split eye extending at the other end of the housing comprising two members pivotally connected and having the pivot, adapted to slide in said housing, an arresting lever mounted beneath said. members and adapted to arrest the same in their closed position, a, locking member to retain the same locked and a Weight on said arresting lever to disengage the parts by gravity when the said arresting member has been released.
2. A device tor connecting chain ends together consisting of a housing having an eye or link for one end of the chain, a split eye extending at the other end ot the housing comprising two members pivotally connected and having the pivot adapted to slide in said housing, a lever with cam movably mounted beneath said members and adapted to arrest the same in their closed position, a locking member to retain the same locked gaged from the hook z2 andA` as it is turned and a Weight on said arresting lever to disengage the parts by gravity when the said arresting member has been released, the said looking member being of a yielding nature and pivoted to the arresting lever to move in a plane at right angles to the plane ot' movement of said arresting lever and means for retaining the parts in the locked position.
3. device for connecting chain ends together. consisting of a housing having an eye or link for one end ot' the chain, a splity eye extending trom the other end of the housing' comprising tivo members pivotally connected and having the pivot adapted to slide in said housing, an arresting lever mounted beneath said members and adapted to arrest the same in their closed position a locking member to retain the same looked and a Weight on said arresting lever to disengage the parts by gravity when the said arresting member has been released, the said locking member being of a vielding nature and pivoted to the arrestingl lever to move in the same plane and at right angles to the plane of movement of the said arresting lever, means tor retaining the parts in the locked position a nose on the said yielding locking member and a cam on the housing With which the said nose eoperates to engage the arresting lever.
4. A. device for connecting chain ends together, consisting of a housing having an 1 eye or linl; for one end of the chain, a split eye extending to the other end of the housing Comprising tvvo members pivotally connected and having the pivot adapted to slide in said housing, an arresting member mountw ed beneath said members and adapted to arrest the same in their closed position, a looking member to retain the same locked and a Weight on said arresting lever to disengage the parts by gravity when the said arresting member has been released, the said locking member being of a yielding nature and pivoted to the arresting member to move in a plane at rightangles to the plane ot' movement of the said arresting member, means for retaining the parts in the locked position, a nose on the said yielding locking member, a cam on the housing vvith vvhieh the said nose cooperates to engage the arresting member, tapered recesses on the adjacent edges of the members of the split eye, tapering toward the pivot connecting said members and a stationary stud mounted in the housing intermediate of said recesses, and adapted to Contact with the same to spread the members.
ln testimony whereof I ati-ix my signature in the presence of t-Wo Witnesses.
