- .isar'n'rr eRAB HooKf LOCK.
Application filed June 24, 1925. Serial No. 39,394;
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VIo'roR SOUCY; a subject ofthe King of Great Britain, residing at Caron BrookQProvince of New Brunswick, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Grab- Hook Locks; and I do'hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact'description of'tlie invention, such as will enable others skill-ed in the art to-which it appertains to makeand use the same.
The present invention pertains to a novel safety grab hooklock adapted for attachment to a chain or similar members of this character. 1 1
The-principal object of the invention is the provision of a device constituting an effective lock of this character and which cannot be released or otherwise affected by accidental blows. In the accomplishment of this object, the lock proper is slidably mounted on the shank of a grab hook and is constructed to engage the short arm of the hook in locking position. The block is formed with a recess in which is concealed a locking member adapted for co-operation with the shank. By virtue of this construction accidental blows struck on the block cannot reach the latch nor change-the adjustment thereof. v
The invention is fully disclosed in the following description and in the accompanying drawings in which;
' section;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device; Figure 2 is a detail thereof partly in Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; i
Figure 4 is a sectional view similar to Figure 2, but showing the parts in a different position; and
Figure ,5 isa view of the device applied to 1 a binding chain.
Reference to these views will now be made by use of like characters which are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
The lock constituting the subject matter of this invention is adapted for application to and operates in conjunction with a grab hook comprising a shank or long arm 1 anda parallel short arm 2. On the shank is slidably mounted a block 3 which constiwhich is pivotally mounted a latch 5.
tutes the lockingmember. In the upper edge of the block is formed a recess 4 in will be seen from the various figures that the latch is for the mostpart concealed in the recess so that it is not affected by blows accidently struck on the block. The upper edge of the block is also formed'at the recess withia pair of opposite finger dents-6 to permitaccess to the latch for the adjustment thereof. The free end f the latch is normally raised by means of a leaf'spring 8 bea-ring'against it and having one end embeddedin the bottom of; therecess i as shownvby the numeral In this manner the lockingend 10 of theilatch is normally pressed .against the 7. upper edge of I the shank 1.
The shank has a pair of notches 11 and 12 formed in the upper edge thereof and disposed near the free end and locking end respectivelyof the shank. The grab hook is so constructed that there is retained between the arms 1 and'2a space 13 of sufficient width to receive a link of a binding chain 14; The locking notch 12 is so positioned that when the latch 10 is received therein, the block 3 engages the short arm 2 and closes the space 13 whereby the chain 14 is locked therein. l
In opening. the space, it is only necessary to apply the fingerin the dents 6 and press on the free end of the latch. The block is now slid until the locking end of the latch enters the release notch 11 to hold the device in open position. To close the lock, the latchis again released from the slot,
andthe block is slid towards the short arm 2 until the latch enters the locking notch 12.
In Figure 5 is illustrated an assembly in which the device is connected to the last link of the binding chains 14: by means of an attaching chain 15. The remaining end of the binding chain may be drawn through a ring 16 until the requisite tightness around without departing from the spirit of the invention as indicated by the appended claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. A safety grab hook lock comprising in combination with a grab hook consisting of a shank and a short arm spaced therefrom, a block slidabiy mounted on said shank and adapted to engage the short arm, and a locking member disposed within said block, said member being adapted for co-operation with said shank.
2. A safety grab hook lock comprising in combination with a grab hook consisting of a shank and a short arm spaced therefrom, a block slidably mounted on said shank and adapted to engage the short arm, a latch pivoted within said block, said shank having notches adapted to receive one end of said latch, and a spring disposed within said block and bearing against the remaining end of said latch.
3. A safety grab hook lock comprising in combination with a grab hook consistingv of a shank and a short arm spaced therefrom, a block slidably mounted on said shank and adapted to engage the short arm, saidvblock having a decess, and a locking member concealed within said recess and adapted for co-operation with said sliank.
4, A safety grab hook lock comprising in combination with a grab hook consisting of a shank and a short arm spaced therefrom, a block slidably mounted on said shank and adapted to engage the short arm, said block having a recess, a latch concealed in said recess, said shank having notches adapted to receive one end of said latch, and a spring disposed in said recess and bearing against the remaining end of said latch.
5. A safety grab hook 100 comprising. in combination with agrab hook consisting of a shank and a short arm spaced therefrom, a block slidably mounted on said shank and adapted to engage the short arm, said block having a recess, a latch pivoted in said recess, said shank having notches adapted to receive one end of said latch, and a spring disposed in said recess and bearing against the-remaining end of said latch, saidblock having finger dents for permitting access to the last named end o-fsaid latch.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand. v
VICTOR SOUCY.
