WILLIAM S. HARD, OF PLANTSVILLE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOB TO H. I). SMITH AND COMPANY, OF PLANTSVILLE, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
BUTCHERS CLEAVER.
ceases.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. ime, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plantsville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butchers Cleavers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in butchers cleavers, and the objects of my improvement are simplicity and economy in production, and the production of a sanitary, efiicient, rigid, and durable article.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a side elevation of my cleaver. Fig. 2 is a plan or edge view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line :0 a" of Fig. l.
The blade A may be mainly of any approved form or design. At the heel end of the blade the upper corner is thickened by a forged enlargement l, of an oval form in cross section, the said enlargement extending along the back edge of the blade toward the outer end for a short distance and then terminating in concavely beveled end faces 5, 5, that extend obliquely across the upper corner of the blade from the back edge downwar ly and rearwardly to the end of the blade at a point between the heel and the back. This enlargement continues outwardly and rearwardly from the said upper corner and gradually merges into a flattened tang 6, which is a part of the Specification or" Eetters Patent.

same forging, and upon the sides of which tang suitable handle scales 7, 7 are secured to form a handle, the upper edge of which handle is in continuation of the upper or back edge of the blade, all as shown.
By my improvement, the handle and tang can be forged integral with each other and with the solid forged enlargement at the junction of the blade and tang, so that the implement may be cheaply produced and at the same time a very strong and durable cleaver is produced with no crevices or seams at the junction of the handle and blade into which decaying substances may lodge and become unsanitar I claim as my invention In a butchers cleaver, the blade A having a forged enlargement a of an oval form in cross section at the heel end or the blade, ex tending along the back edge of the blade for a short distance and then terminating in beveled end faces 5, 5, that extend obliquely across the upper corner of the blade from the back edge downwardly and rearwardly to the end of the blade at a point between the heel and the back, the said enlargement continuing outwardly and rearwardly from the upper corner of the blade at the said heel end, and gradually merging into a flattened.
