IVANUFCTURING COIVANY, MISSOURI.
essere To alt 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that l. Heco Heimann, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful lm- [n'ovement in Shoivof which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates te show cases, displaj)v cabinets and the like.
it, has for its principal objects to secure a maxinnnn area of storage and display room with the utilization of a minimum area of tloor space, and to attain certain other advantages hereinafter more fully appearing.
rthe invention consists in the parts and in the arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
ln the accompanying drawings which oi-m part of this specification and wherein ike symbols roter to like parts Wherever hoy occur, lignre 1 is a horizontal. sect-ion a show case embodying my invent; is a side elevation of the shonT the separable section shown by dotted lines in extended position; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical section through the bottoni portion of the show case taken on the line il :3 of Fig. l; Fig'. -lf is a similar view showing the extensible parts in cxtended position; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical section showing the separable section et' the show case turned en its pivotal support and moved back into opened pesitiou; "Fig, e is a horizontal section. through the trackivays and showing the extensible carrier frame for the separable section of the shovyv case in top plan; Fig. 7 is a fragmentary view, partly in front elevation and partly in vert-ical section, showing the carrier and trackivays; and, Fig. 8 is an enlarged fragmentary View7 partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section, showing the supporting bracket and brace which cooperates With the hanger bar and is swiveled on the supporting post.
rlhe show case comprises a bottom member or floor 1 Which is supported at its corners by legs or blocks 2. The case is further provided with a rear Wall 3 and side Walls-ft. The sidewalls extend over approximately one halt of the Width of the case. The top 5 of the show case extends beyond the forward edges of the side Walls 4t and everhangs the forward portion of the bottem which is not inclosed by any fixed side Specification of Letters Patent. @attesti "viter: 25:9, Application tiled January 17, 191C.

and end walls. 'llhe side VWalls et and top 5 are preferably provided with transparent panelsj bnl; obviously, the case may be constructed as an ordinary cabinet Without having transparent panels.
Beneath the bottom l is monnted an extensible carrier comprising a skeleton frame having side and end members t3, T, respectively, and a central portion S which is connected to the side and end members by radial members S). Extendingl vertically npivard from the center portion S of the carrier frame is a pest l0. This pest projects through an elongated slot l1 in the bottom 17 which slot. xxends from a. point approxiff lately at the center of the bottom-1 te the frontl edge thereof. rllhe extensible carrier lfurther comprises a pair of double track members 12 which are connected at their inner ends by a cross member 13 and at their front ends by a cross rod l-l, thus constituting a substantially rectangular frame.
Jenrnaled on brackets 15 which are secured to the under side of the bottom 1 are rollers 1G on which the rear portions of the track members 12 travel, The forward portions of the track members are supported on rollers 17 which are mounted on brackets 1S on the under side of the bottom member 1 near the front edge thereof. These rollers 16, 17 cooperate with the outer channels of the track members l2. The carrier frame is provided on opposite sides near its rear end, with rollers 19 Which are fitted to the inner channels of the track members; and the front end portion of the carrier frame runs on rollers Q0 Which are onrnaled on the cross red 14 Which connects the front ends of the track members. Extending inwardly from the track members 12 are pins or studs 21 which are arranged in the path of the rollers 19 on the carrier frame so that When the carrier frame is pulled forward, the rollers 19 Will contact with the pins 21 and the continued forward movement of the carrier frame will carry the track members With it until stops 22 on the track members come in contact with the rollers 16. The stops 22 are preferably provided by turning the ends of the cross member 13 over the outer face of the vertical web of the track members 12.
rlhe track members 1Q are preferably each constructed of tivo channels placed back to back and having their web port-ions riveted together. rlhe flange portions of the channels are rounded; and the rollers which cooperate With said channels have rounded edges. Thus, the device may be readilyy operated Without binding as the arrangement tends to make it self-centering.
plate Q3 having a flange portion Q4 is secured to the front end of the extensible carrier frame and it is extended on opposite sides of the frame to cover the front ends of the track members l2 so as to hide the same and give a finish to the structure. On the inner face of this plate 23 near the ends thereof are secured brackets 25 on which are ournaled caster Wheels Q6. These Wheels are located to normally clear the floor or surface on Which the shoiv case is placed, but they serve as supports for the front end of the carrier frame When it is extended.
A center brace and carrier member 27 is siviveled on the upper end portion of the post 10. Preferably this member 2T has a cylindrical portion or barrel 28 which is sleeved over the post and it is provided with an axial conical recess Which lits over the apex portion of a conical bearing piece 29 which is iitted on the end of the post l0. This carrier member 2T has a bracket extension 30 which is secured at its end to the upper portion of the end Wall 3l of a selarable and reversible case section Whose side Walls 32 are connected near their top edge by a cross bar rllhis cross bar is fitted through a transverse bore in the carrier member QT and it is fastened in place by a set screw or other suitable securing device. The separable and reversible case section is also provided With a bottom 35 on which is secured a hinge member 3G having an eye or sleeve portion 37 which is sleeved on the lower portion of the post l0. This hinge member 3G is preferably made in the form of a spider and its legs are secured to the bottom of the separable case section so as to give stability to the structure. A handle 3S is provided on the outer side of the end Wall 3l of the separable section of the show case for convenience in Withdrawing and turning the same; and t-he carrier member QT is provided W'th a handle extension 39 opposite to its arm 230 for convenience in manipulating the separable section of the case when it is in open position.
lllhen it is desired. to gain access to the interior of the shoiv case, the separable section is withdrawn as shown in Fig. e. The peculiar construction of the extensible carrier and trackivay beneath the base l permits of this. After the parts have been moved to the position shoivn in Fig. 4:, the separable case section is swung around on its supporting post lO and the parts movedback into position shovvn in Fig. 5. ln this position of the parts, the separable case section is practically entirely under the top of the case and the projecting portions of the extensible carrier and trackWays extend but a short distance beyond the front of the case, thereby taking up but a small amount of aisle space. The outer edges of the garments which are hung on the hangers which are in turn suspended from the rod 33, extend substantially as far as the carrier member, and thus said carrier member is practically guarded. rlhat is, a person will not be liable to trip over the extended carrier member as the same Will be cleared as the person passes clear of the garments.
By providing the case vrith a separable and reversible section. and having the supporting bar therein for the hangers extend parallel with the front Wall of the case and close to the open side of the separable pection, the bar is in convenient reach when it is desired to place the hangers thereon or remove the same therefrom; and the garments project partially outside of the case. This is an advantage over the ordinary form of cabinet or shou case `which is provided .vith a front door or doors and having an extensible hanger rack or `bar which is adapted to be Withdrawn outside or" the cabinet and thereby takes up considerable aisle space, as provision. has to be made for entirely Withdrayving the rack for convenience in removing the innermost garments thereon.
To exclude dust from the interior of the shovv case When it is closed, as shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3, strips 40 of felt or other suitable material are secured along the top edges of the side Walls 32 and fron-t Wall 3l of the separable section so as to close thel space between the top A strip 4l is also provided along the inner edge of the bottom 35 of the separable section to close the space between the bottom l. lf desirable, hou'- ever, the dust-excluding strips may obviously be secured on the fixed portions of the case instead of the separable section as shown.
Obviously, the device admits of eonsiderable modification Without departing from my invention. Therefore, l do not Wish to e limited to the specific arrangement and construction shoivn.
