Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 14, 1908.
Patented Mar. 22, I910.
Serial No. 457,704.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED ELLIOTT YoUNos, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of lviiichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet- Combs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in toilet combs.
The object of my invention is to provide a comb of this character having means whereby the short hairs are forced under the long ones.
Another object of my invention is to provide a more simple and cheap construction of a comb to accomplish the desired results.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a side view of a comb showing one-half thereof embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is an enlarged, perspective view of a portion of my improved arrangement and construction of teeth.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represent-s a comb which can be made of any desired material, and with teeth of different lengths, such as those for the use of gentlemen and those for the use of ladies. In my improved comb I have shown one-half of the comb of the ordinary form now in use, while the other half embodies my invention.
My improved comb is designed more especially for ladies, who, as well known, have considerable difliculty in keeping the short hairs, which are not long enough to tie, in place, and it is the utility of this device to force the shorter hairs under the longer ones and thus give the head a neat appearance.
The comb consists of the body portion 2 having at the left the teeth 3 arranged the same as the ordinary comb, while the teeth on the right side have alternately-arranged long and short teeth.
The long teeth are indicated by a and are the same length as the teeth 3 on the left of the comb, while the teeth 5 are shorter than the teeth 4, and have their outer ends rounded over from side to side as indicated at 6, and provided with notches or grooves 7 in and continuously following over the end of the rounded portion of the teeth, making the endsof the teeth like one side of a grooved pulley which catch the first surface hairs they touch carrying them inwardly and laying them under the outer or general surface of the other hair, and thus easily and readily tucking under the long and heavy hair all short or broken surface hairs which if left there would soon be blown about and look untidy, giving a smooth finished surface to the hair. My device is also adapted to be used in combing the surface gray hairs below the surface of the other hairs, so long as the gray hairs are sufficiently few in number to be readily hidden under the other hair.
The object of having the comb with onehalf of the usual form, is to first comb the hair out as ordinarily, and then use the other end and comb the shorter or gray hairs below the smooth surface of the other hairs.
lVhile I have shown and described the alternating arrangement of the teeth of different lengths, it might be desired to have the teeth all of the same length, or all the teeth notched, and therefore I do not care to limit myself to the specific construction shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A toilet comb provided with alternating long and short teeth, the long teeth being pointed and the short teeth being notched as shown.
2. A toilet comb provided with long and short teeth, the long teeth being pointed and the short teeth being rounded and notched over the end as shown.
3. A comb provided with teeth having notches extending over the ends thereof in planes at right angles to the sides of the comb.
4. A comb provided With teeth rounded the short teeth being grooved over the end 10 end grooved over the end from side to side from slde to side transverse the length of transverse the length of the comb. the comb.
5. A comb provided with alternating long In testimony whereof I have afliXed my and short teeth, the long teeth being pointed signature in presence of two Witnesses. and the short te th rounded from side to FRED ELLIOTT YOUNGS. side and notched, substantially as described. lVitnesses:
6. A toilet comb provided with long and ELMER K. SMITH,
short teeth, the long teeth being pointed, and HARRY H. BURR.
