To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Janus B. NIXON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in ink stands.

The object of the invention is to provide an improved cover-operating mechanism whereby the cover of the ink well may be quickly and easily removed as the pen is dipped into the well, and which will be automatically restored to a closed position after the pen has been dipped.

With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of an ink stand showing the application of my invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view through the stand, and the cover-operating mechanism; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the cover-reciprocating member; and Fig. 5 is a similar View of the operating lever and finger piece.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the ink stand which com prises a base, 2, in the upper side of which is formed a recess, 3, in which is placed the ink well. Secured to the rear side of the base and projecting upwardly above the same is a standard, 4, having formed therethrough a vertically-disposed channel. In the standard, 4, is arranged a cover-reciprocating member, 5, which comprises a bar, the lower end of which is bent inwardly at an angle as shown at 6, and has secured thereto a weight, 7, said Weight being disposed in a recess, 8, formed in the lower side of the base and communicating through a notch, 9, with the lower end of the stand ard, 4. The upper end of the cover-operating member 5 is also bent inwardly at rightangles above the standard, 4, and said inwardly-bent portion is provided on its end with a head, 10, in which is formed a notch,

The head, 10, is adapted to be engaged between a pair of parallel ears, 13, formed on the rear side of the cover, 14, while the notch, 12, in the head, 10, is engaged with a transversely disposed pin, 15, arranged through said ears whereby said cover is loosely connected with the upper portion of the operating member, 5.

Pivotally mounted in the upper end of the standard, 4, is an operating lever, 16, said lever being bent inwardly at right angles as shown at 17, and thence laterally to form a curved operating arm, 18, the outer end of which is provided with a finger piece or plate, 19. The lever, 16, projects downwardly in the standard, 4, to near the pivotal connection of the cover-reciprocating member, 5, whereby when the finger piece on the operating arm of the lever, 16, is depressed, the lower end of said lever will bear against the member, 5, thus swinging the same rearwardly and drawing the cover back from over the upper end of the ink well. \Vhen the cover-reciprocating member is thus swung rearwardly, the weight, 7, on the right-angular lower end of the member, 5, will be raised in the recess, 8, of the base so that when the pressure of the fingers is released from the finger plate, 19, said weight will swing the n1ember,'5, back to its normal position and thus slide the cover back in position over the ink well.

By means of the cover-operating mechanism, such as herein shown and described, the cover of an ink well may be quickly and easily opened as the pen is dipped into the ink and when the pen has been dipped, the cover will immediately close, thus preventing the evaporation of the ink or the accumulation of dust or foreign matter therein.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,

, the construction and operation of the inven- & tion will be readily understood without re quiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:

1. In an ink stand, a base adapted to receive an ink well, a standard secured to said base and projecting upwardly therefrom at one side thereof, said standard having a longitudinally disposed channel or groove in its outer face, a cover carrying lever mounted in said channel and having a laterally extending arm at its upper end and a pivotal connection at its lower end with the lower end of said standard, cover closing means secured to the lower end of said lever, a notched head arranged on the laterally extending arm of said lever, an ink well cover having a pin loosely and detachably engaged with the notched head of said lever, an operating lever pivotally connected to the upper end of said standard and arranged in said channel beneath said first mentioned lever, a laterally curved arm on the upper end of said operating lever having a finger plate 011 its outer end arranged adjacent the mouth of the ink well in position for depression by the hand carrying the pen .to actuate the cover reciprocating lever to rcmove the cover from the well.

2. In an ink stand the combination of a supporting base adapted to receive an ink reservoir, an upright arranged at one side of the reservoir and secured to said base, a lever having laterally extending upper and lower arms at its opposite ends, the inner end of its lower arm being pivoted to said base and its other arm extending laterally over said reservoir, a cover pivotally connected with the free end of said last mentioned arm, an L-shaped operating lever pivoted at the junction of its arms to the upper end of said upright and having the free end of its long arm arranged to engage the upper face of said cover carrying lever and a finger piece connected to move said operating lever outward to uncover the reservoir, said finger piece being arranged adjacent the mouth of the ink well in approximately the same plane thereof and means on said lower arm for returning the said cover to operative position.
