Be it known that I, RICHARD \V. Ron- ERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at W ashlngton, 1n the Dlstrict of Columbia,

have invented new and useful Improvements in Inking-Pad Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to inking pad receptacles, and its primary object is to provide a novel and highly useful means for returning the cover of the receptacle to its closed position upon the completion of each operation of inking a stamp so as to prevent dust entering the receptacle and settling upon the inking pad and the evaporation of the ink.

A further object is to provide a device of the character stated wherein the means for returning the cover to its closed position has such relation to the cover as to present only sufficient resisting power as will be required for the prompt return of said cover to its original or closed position.

A further object is to mount said means upon the receptacle in a manner to permit it to be easily and quickly thrown into inoperative position in order that the cover may be thrown into position to be retained open when work is being done which requires the inking of the stamp at the maxi mum speed of manipulation.

A still further object of the invention. is to provide a finger piece by means of which the cover may be opened readily and quickly, which is adapted to be bent down so as not to form an obstruction to the packing of the receptacle for shipment and by means of which the cover may be secured in closed position for the purpose of shipment.

WVith the above objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the manner in which the finger piece may be bent so as not to form an obstruction to packing, and to lock the cover in closed position. Fig. 4 is a view in end elevation, the cover being in opened position, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the means for returning the cover to closed position.

Referring to the drawings by reference numerals, 1 designates a receptacle comprising a base 2, a cover 3, and an inking pad car ried by the base 2. The receptacle may be of any construction found desirable and may be constructed of any material suitable for the purpose. The base 2 is of a weight sullicient to prevent it from being tilted by the opening of the cover 3, while the cover 3 is secured thereto by means of a hinge 5.

Secured to the rear side of the base 2 is a pivoted leaf spring (3, the same being secured to dispose its upper free end in opposition to and impinging lightly upon the rear end of the cover 3. This spring is adapted to permit the cover to be opened a distance sullicient to permit a stamp to be inked and to return the cover to its closedv position after the stamp has been inked. To accomplish this the said spring is movable on its pivot in a plane parallel with the hinged edge of the cover. The free end of the spring is sufficiently flexible so that, while impinging upon the cover, it will not obstruct the initial opening movement of the cover, but will offer sufficient resistance to return the cover to a slightly forward position beyond the vertical to cause the cover to gravitate to its closed position. The spring is provided with a perforation 7 through which may be let a screw 8 to secure the spring in applied position. Only one screw is used and in view thereof, the spring may be moved to dispose its free end in such position that the cover may be thrown rearwardly beyond the vertical, whereby the cover will remain open and permit the maximum speed manipulation of the stamp to be inked without necessitating the opening of the cover every time it is desired to ink the same.
