RICHARD W. ROBERTS, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
INKING-PAD REGEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14:, 1908.
Application filed April 14.1906 Serial No. 311.790.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD \V. Ron- ERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at W ashlngton, 1n the Dlstrict of Columbia,
have invented new and useful Improvements in Inking-Pad Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to inking pad receptacles, and its primary object is to provide a novel and highly useful means for returning the cover of the receptacle to its closed position upon the completion of each operation of inking a stamp so as to prevent dust entering the receptacle and settling upon the inking pad and the evaporation of the ink.
A further object is to provide a device of the character stated wherein the means for returning the cover to its closed position has such relation to the cover as to present only sufficient resisting power as will be required for the prompt return of said cover to its original or closed position.
A further object is to mount said means upon the receptacle in a manner to permit it to be easily and quickly thrown into inoperative position in order that the cover may be thrown into position to be retained open when work is being done which requires the inking of the stamp at the maxi mum speed of manipulation.
A still further object of the invention. is to provide a finger piece by means of which the cover may be opened readily and quickly, which is adapted to be bent down so as not to form an obstruction to the packing of the receptacle for shipment and by means of which the cover may be secured in closed position for the purpose of shipment.
WVith the above objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an inking pad receptacle constructed in accordance With my invention, the cover being shown in closed position. Fig. 2 is a transverse central sectional view. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the manner in which the finger piece may be bent so as not to form an obstruction to packing, and to lock the cover in closed position. Fig. 4 is a view in end elevation, the cover being in opened position, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the means for returning the cover to closed position.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals, 1 designates a receptacle comprising a base 2, a cover 3, and an inking pad car ried by the base 2. The receptacle may be of any construction found desirable and may be constructed of any material suitable for the purpose. The base 2 is of a weight sullicient to prevent it from being tilted by the opening of the cover 3, while the cover 3 is secured thereto by means of a hinge 5.
Secured to the rear side of the base 2 is a pivoted leaf spring (3, the same being secured to dispose its upper free end in opposition to and impinging lightly upon the rear end of the cover 3. This spring is adapted to permit the cover to be opened a distance sullicient to permit a stamp to be inked and to return the cover to its closedv position after the stamp has been inked. To accomplish this the said spring is movable on its pivot in a plane parallel with the hinged edge of the cover. The free end of the spring is sufficiently flexible so that, while impinging upon the cover, it will not obstruct the initial opening movement of the cover, but will offer sufficient resistance to return the cover to a slightly forward position beyond the vertical to cause the cover to gravitate to its closed position. The spring is provided with a perforation 7 through which may be let a screw 8 to secure the spring in applied position. Only one screw is used and in view thereof, the spring may be moved to dispose its free end in such position that the cover may be thrown rearwardly beyond the vertical, whereby the cover will remain open and permit the maximum speed manipulation of the stamp to be inked without necessitating the opening of the cover every time it is desired to ink the same. A finger piece 9 is secured to the top of the cover 3 to projcct beyond its front edge and this projecting portion thereof may be curved or bent to any desired angle or position. hen it is desi'red to open the cover, the under surface of the tiingcr piece 9 is engaged and an upward pressure exerted.
hen it is desired to ship the receptacle the projecting portion of the finger piece is bent downward into engagement with the edge of the receptacle, in which position the finger piece does not form an obstruction. The projecting portion of the finger piece is stamped up to provide a lug 10 which is caused to engage in a seat 11 in the edge of within the scope of the invention without de Having fully described and illustrated my invention, what I claim is:
An inking pad receptacle having a cover hinged to one side thereof atthe upper edge of such side, and a spring pivoted at its lower end to such side for movement in a vertical plane parallel with such side to dispose the free end of such spring either against such It should be apparent from the above deside of the receptacle, below the upper edge scription, taken in connection with the acl thereof, out of the way of the cover, or below companying drawings, that I provide means such side to engage the hinged side of the for returning the cover of an inking pad re I cover when the latter is open, said springceptacle to its closed position upon the comhaving an outwardly extending offset portion pletion of each operation of inking a stamp, near the free end thereof to facilitate graspthat said means may be readily and quickly ing of such spring and having its free end thrown into inoperative position, that I procurved outwardly, the length of such spring vide a finger piece which is so constructed being such that the free end thereof projects and has such relation to the cover that the beyond the outer side of the cover when the cover may be' readily and quickly opened latter is open, and lies against the hinged and which is adapted to lock the cover in side of the cover and wholly below the plane closed position, and that my invention is of the outer or upper surface thereof when simple and durable, and one which may be the cover is closed. manufactured and sold at a comparatively In testimony whereof, I affix my signature low cost. in presence of two witnesses.
Changes in the form, proportions and mi- RICHARD WV ROBERTS nor details of construction may be made the base 2, so that the cover may be locked in closed position. By bending the projecting portion of the finger piece the lug 10 is positioned for engagement with the seat 11.
In order to provide means by which the 1 spring 6 may be thrown into inoperative position, said spring is stamped up to provide a projection 12.
