To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Known l IAUGELAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ellsworth, in the county of Hamilton, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in bottle stoppers of the class wherein provision is made for movably coupling a stopper to a bottle and clamping the same in position thereon, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the etliciency and utility of devices of this character.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims; and, in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the neck portion of a bottle with the improved device applied and in closed position, Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The improved device may be applied to bottles of various sizes without material structural changes, and is adapted more particularly for use upon bottles containing eltervescent liquids, which require that the stopper shall be forcibly retained in position," while at the same time readily detachable to permit the discharge of the contents.
The body 10 of stoppers of the class to which the present invention applies are generally constructed of porcelain, glass, or the like, and each body is provided with. a downwardly directed projection 11 which carries a rubber or similar packing 12, and with a recess 18 at one end and a transverse aperture 14 at the other end, the packing member 12 being arranged to bear upon the neck portion 13 of the bottle, as shown.
Bearing around the neck portion of the bottle is a wire band 16 having eyes 17 at one side of the neck and eyes 18-19 at the opposite side, as shown. Extending through the aperture 14: is a wire loop 20 which is engaged at its terminals in the eyes 17 and coupled by a transverse strap 21. Bythis means the body 10 with its projection 11 and packing 12 is swingingly coupled to the band 16, as shown,
A Ushaped lever forms a portion oi the improved device and comprises spaced side members 22-23 having out-turned termi nals 241-25 which are passed through the eyes 18-19 of the band 16, and the sides 22-28 are further provided with loops 26-27 intermediate their ends, as shown. By this arrangement curved elbow portions 28-29 are produced between the eyes 18-19, as shown in Fig. 1, the object to be hereinafter explained. A U-shaped Wire straining member also forms a part of the improved device and is constructed with spaced sides 30-31 and a transverse con necting portion 32, the connecting portion being located within the recess 13 of the body 10 and the sides 30-81 curving inwardly and extending between the eyes 18-19 of the band 16 and with outturned terminals 33-34 extending in opposite directions through the loops 26-27. The inwardly curved sides 30-31 are spaced apart a greater distance opposite the elbows 28-29 than the distance between the elbows, as shown in Fig. 1, so that when strain is applied by pressure applied to the members 22-23 the sides 30-31 will engage against the elbows 28-29 and be compressed inwardly when they pass the elbows and be thereby yieldably retained from accidental displacement. By this arrangement it will be obvious that when the body 10 and its packing 12 are secured upon the bottle, the
members 30-31 will be yieldably supported,
and accidental displacement effectually pre vented, as it will require considerable force exerted upon the members 22-23 to displace them and to compress them when passing over the elbows 28-29.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured of relatively heavy and rigid wire, while at the same time possessing the requisite resiliency and resistance to effect the desired results.
The U-shaped lever 22-28 bears at its bend partly around the curvature of the neck 13' of the bottle, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the lever is held from lateral movement, and its etliciency increased.
Vvhat is claimed is 1. In a bottle stopper fastening device, a neck band adapted to be swingingly coupled at one side to a stopper and with spaced eyes at the other side, a lever member formed in U-shape with out-turned tenninals fitting through said eyes and with loops in its side members intermediate the ends, a straining member formed in U-shape and adapted to engage over a stopper and with out-turned terminals extending through said loops and with its sides' spaced apart a greater distance than the sides of the lever, wherebythe sides of the straining member are compressed by the lever member and yieldably supported from displacement.
'2. The combination with a bottle stopper, of a band adapted to encircle the neck of a bottle and swingingly coupled to said stopper at one side and withxspaced eyes at the opposite side, a lever member formed in U- shape with out-turned terminals inserted through said eyes and loops at its side members intermediate its ends, a straining member formed in U-shape and engaging over the stopper and with out-turned terminals passing through said loops, and with its sides spaced apart a greater distance than the distance between the sides of the lever.
