Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 19, 1907 Application filed September 5. 1905. Serial No. 276,951.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FREDERICK C. WAR- REN and WILLIAM H. PREsToN, residing at Valley Junction, in the county of Monroe and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jar and Can Closures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in closure devices for jars, cans, bottles, and the like, and in its generic nature consists of a metallic member of spring metal forming a bridge to go over the closure-cap of the vessel and having anchor or hook portions to engage the flange of the vessel-neck and an eyebolt for adjusting the tension of the bridge member to tightly force the cap or closure member onto the vessel to close the opening thereof and also to form a fin er-receiving portion whereby the vessel can be carried without the use of addi tional handles, the vessel-closure cap having a countersunk portion to receive and cooperate with the end of the eyebolt to hold the same in position and prevent it from slipping off, and thus keep the bridge member always in place.
Primarily the invention has for its object to provide a device of this character of a very simple and effective construction which can be easily and cheaply manufactured and A which will readily serve its intended purposes.
In its more detailed nature the invention comprises certain novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first described in detail and then be specifically pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which the invention is shown as applied to a fruit-jar and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention applied for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 4 is-a cross-section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail erspective view of the closure-cap detached. *ig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the bridge member detached. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the eyebolt and its nut member.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, 1 designates the vessel having the usual rimmed neck portion 1 and the outlet-aperture 1 which receives the closure-cap 2, as shown. The cap 2 has a central countersunk portion 2 for a purpose presently understood.
3 designates a bridge member which comprises the bridge cross member 3 and the downwardly-projectinglegs or arms 3 terminating in hook members 3, which engage below the rim portion 1 of the vessel. The bridge member also includes a central rectangularly-bent portion 3 to receive a nut 4, as shown, and hold the nut with its under face flush with the under face of the portion 3 of the bridge member 3.
5 designates an eyebolt having a finger-engaging eye and a threaded portion 5", which passes through an aperture 3 in the bridge member 3 and cooperatively engages the nut 4, as shown, and is held with its end 5 in the countersunk portion 2 of the closure-cap 2, as shown, which also forms a thrust-bearing for the eyebolt.
So far as described, the manner in which the invention operates will be best explained as follows: The cap 2 is first placed m-position, and then the bridge member, with the nut and eyebolt attached, is slipped over the cap and springs into place. The eyebolt is then turned until the bridge member is drawn tight to tightly keep the cap 2 on the vessel. The parts are then in their final adjusted position, and the eyebolt forms avery convenient means for carrying the vessel from place to place.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the complete construction, operation, and many advantages of this invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a vesselclosure clamp comprising 'a sheet metal bridge member having downwardly-projecting legs for straddling the closure-cap of the vessel, said legs terminating in hook or anchor portions for engaging the vessel, said bridge member having centrally a rectangularly-formed bent portion, a nut held in said eyebolt serving as a fingenengaging portion, bent portion and prevented from turning substantially as shown and described. thereby, an eyebolt passing through said FREDERICK G.
