COVER-FASTENING FOR FRUIT-JARS, 84C.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,500, dated June 12, 1900. Application filed February 26, 1900. Serial No. 6,576. (No model.)

640,182, granted to me January 2, 1900. Each of the locking-clips of this patent comprises a pair of horizontally-swinging arms connected together at their outer ends by a cross-bar or thumb-piece and pivoted at their inner ends to a pin which passes directly through an opening formed in the marginal portion of the glass cover. This construction, while forming a satisfactory look and seal, is liable to cause breakage of the glass cover where the pivot-pins of the clips pass through the cover, owing to the strain exerted upon the latter in forcing the clips into their locked position.

The object of my present invention is to overcome this objection; and it consists, essentially, in mounting the clips 011 a separate yoke or cross-bar carried by the cover, whereby the friable cover is relieved from strain.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a fruit-jar provided with my improved cover-fastening. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same, showing the fastenings in their locked position. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the jar, showing the cap locked. Fig. 4 is a top plan view, partly in section, showing the cap unlocked. Fig. 5 is a detached side elevation of the yoke, showing its form before it is applied to the cap and corrugated. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side elevation of the jar, showin g a modified construction of the yoke. Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view of the cap shown in Fig. 6.

A is a jar, bottle, or similar vessel which is provided at its upper end with a rim or outwardly-projecting flange a, and B is the cap or cover of the jar, having a depending flange b, which fits snugly over the rim of the jar. A rubber gasket or packing-ring o is preferably interposed between the under side of the cap and the upper surface of the rim a, as shown.

D D are the locking devices or clips, which are constructed substantially as shown and described in the Letters Patent hereinbefore referred to, at being the horizontally-swinging arms or levers of the clips, d the pivoteyes formed at their inner ends, and d the cross-bar or thumb-piece connecting the outer ends of the arms.

Referring to the preferred construction shown in Figs 1 to 5, E is a yoke or spanner which extends centrally across the upper side of the cap B and which carries the lockingclips D. This yoke is provided with depending end portions e, forming pivots, which are encircled by the eyes d of the locking-clips. These pivots are seated in notches f, formed in the edge of the cap, and their lower ends are upset to form heads g, whereby the clips are retained thereon, and the pivots are in turn confined in their notches for retaining the yoke in place on the cap.

The two arms (1 d of each fastening D are preferably spread apart or constructed so as to diverge toward their connecting-bar d as shown, so that the arms clear the jar-rim and the cover and only their inner portions bear against the cap and the jar-rim, thereby preventing the fastenings from unlocking accidentally, which would be liable to occur if the lower arms of the fastenings were in contact with the beveled face of the jar-rim.

By pivoting the fastenings D to a yoke carried by the cap instead of directly to the cap the strain exerted in looking the cap is received by the yoke, thereby relieving the cap from such strain and preventing breakage thereof when the same is constructed of glass orsimilarfriablematerial. Thebodyormain portion of the yoke is preferably straight in its original form, as shown in Fig. 5, and after applying the fastenings D to its depend ing ends e and upsetting the latter the yoke is placed in position on the cover and corrugated, as shown in Fig. 3, whereby it is contracted or shortened, and its ends are drawn into the notchesfof the cap. In its original form the yoke is somewhat longer than it is angular ends of the yoke are headed after passing the same through the pivot-eyes of the fastenings D and into the notches of the cap. The yoke is somewhat elastic and adapts itself to any looseness of the cover or any.

irregularities of the cover or the fastenings. If desired, the yoke may be arranged in the form of a bow at one side of the cap, either at the top or bottom thereof. In the modification shown in Figs. 6 and 7 such a yoke E is arranged at the lower edge of the cap and its angular ends, which form the pivots of the fastenings D, project upwardly into the notches in the edge of the cap.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with a jar or similar vessel provided at its upper end with a projecting rim, of a cap or cover, a yoke or spanner carried by the cover and extending from side to side thereof, and locking-clips or fastenings attached to the ends of said yoke and constructed to interlock with the rim of the jar when closed and to clear said rim when moved to their open position, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with a jar or similar vessel provided at its upper end with a projecting rim, of a cap or cover provided at opposite sides with notches, a yoke extending from side to side of the cover and having vertical end portions seated in said notches and forming pivots, and clips or fastenings mounted on said pivots and each composed of a pair of horizontal arms connected together at their outer ends and constructed to interlock with the upper side of the cover and the under side of said jar-rim, respectively, substantially as set forth.

The combination with a jar or similar vessel provided at its upper end with a projecting rim, of a cap or cover provided at opposite sides with notches, a yoke extending centrally across the top of the cover and having vertical end portions seated in said notches and provided between-its ends with corrugations, and horizontally-swinging clips or fastenings pivoted to the end portions of the yoke and adapted to engage over the cover and under the jar'rim, respectively, substantially as set forth.

4; The combination with a jar or similar vessel provided at its upper end w-ith a proiecting rim, of a cap or cover, and a clip or fastening applied to the cover andconsisting of an upright pivot arranged on the marginal portion of the cover, and a pair of horizontally-swinging arms engaging at their inner ends with said pivot and constructed to bear in their closed position against the upper side of the cover and the under side of said jarrim, respectively, said arms being connected at their outer ends by a vertical cross-barand diverging outwardly ortoward said bar, substantially as set forth.
