UNITED sTArns PATENT onnicn.
ELIAS WELKER, OF CHEEKTOWAGA, AND EMANUEL H. LONG, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
JAR CLOSURE OR FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ELIAS WELKER and EMANUEL II. LONG, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Oheektowaga, county of Erie, State of New York, and Buffalo, county of Erie, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar Closures or Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved fastener for securing the cover of a jar or the like in place and the object of the invention is to produce a fastener which when in place will exert such pressure upon the cover that it will be forced against the mouth of the jar and hermetically seal the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for positively locking the fastener to the jar so that all probability of its loosening and permitting the misplacement of the cover is avoided.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the pressure bar and locking lever that the pressure is equally distributed upon the cover so that it will contact at all points with the surrounding edge of the mouth of the jar.
The invention also relates to certain details of construction all of which will be fully and clearly hereinafter described and claimed reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved fastener in place upon a jar, the fastener being shown in locking position. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the improved fastener on line a a, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detached central vertical section through the improved fastener showing it in unlocked position. Fig. 41 is a detached inside view of one of the gri ping or clamping members. Fig. 5 is a detadlied view of the wedge locking ever.
In referring to the drawings for the details of construction, like numerals designate like parts.
The improved jar closure or fastener consists of two clamping or gripping members, a pressure bar for exerting ressure upon the cover of the jar and a we ge shaped locking lever for exerting force upon the pressure bar iagnd operating the clamping or gripping memers.
In the preferred form of the improved fastener as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the pressure bar 1 consists of a Specification of Letters Patent.

straight plate of metal of suitable width, the ends of which are bent so as to form. eyes 2. This pressure bar has a bottom enlargement 3 located at about the middle thereof and ar ranged so that when the fastener is in place upon a j a1- or other receptacle 4 it will contact with the cover 5.
The clamping or gripping members are hinged to the pressure bar 1 by pins 6 which pass through openings in the clamping members and through the eyes 2. These clamping members are of angular form, each having a vertical portion 7 and a substantially horizontal portion 8 extending at about right angles to the portion 7. The vertical portions 7 of the clamping members are provided with inwardly extending flanges 9, the lower portions of the inner edges of which are serrated as shown at 10 in Figs. 1, 3 and 4, so as to constitute gripping jaws to grip upon the screw threads 1.1 of the jar. The flanges 9 are extended as shown at 12 in Figs. 3 and 4, so as to meet the substantially horizontal portions 8 of the clamping members and serve as stiffening or strengthening ribs for said portions. It will be noted that the horizontal portions 8 of the clamping members extend toward each other and are of sufficient length so that they overlap. They are also provided with longitudinal beads 13 to stiffen and strengthen them as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The clamping members are operated to grip the jar by a lever 14 pivoted to the pressure bar. This lever 14 has an outer curved portion 15 the outer edge of which is bent upwardly at right angles to form a vertical flange 16. The top edge of this flange is in clined as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 5, and said inclined edge is adapted to contact with the bottom surface of one of the overlapping ends of the horizontal portions 8 of the clamping members. The bottom surface of the curved outer portion 15 of the lever contacts with the pressure bar 1 at about its middle and above the enlargement 3. The lever has a vertical portion 17 which serves as a thumb piece by means of which it can be operated. It will readily be seen that a movement of the thumb piece toward the fastener will turn the lever 14 on its pivot and force the flange 16 between the overlapping ends of the horizontal portions 8 of the clamping members and the pressure bar 1. Owing to its inclined upper edge, this flange is in reality a wedge which tends to separate the portions 8 of the clamping members from the pressure bar. This action moves the clamping members on their pivot pins 6 so that the inwardly extending flanges 9 contact with and grip the screw threaded top portion of the sides of the jar, as shown in Fig. 1. When the clamping members securely grip the jar and are incapable of further movement a downward pressure is exerted upon the pressure bar by the wedge shaped flange, and said pressure bar forces the cover 5 of the jar tightly against its seat.
A packing 18 of suitable material may be interposed between the jar and its cover so as to insure a perfect air-tight joint.
The great advantage of this improved fastener resides in its great strength, its simplicity and the positiveness of its locking action, there being no reliance on the spring action of various parts to secure the locking effect, but instead a Wedge locking lever is employed which is positive and sure in its action.
We claim.
1. In a device of the class described, a pressure member adapted to press against the cap or cover of a jar, two angular clamping members pivoted to the ends of the pres sure member, and a lever pivoted to the pressure member and operatively engaging the clamping members.
2. In a device of the class described, a pressure member adapted to press against the cap or cover of a jar, two angular clamping members pivoted to the ends of the pressure member and having overlapping portions extending above the pressure member and depending portions adapted to grip the sides of a jar, and a wedge lever pivoted to the pressure member and located below the lapping portions of the clamping member.
3. In a device of the class described, a pressure member adapted to press against the cap or cover of a jar, two clamping members pivoted to the ends of the pressure memher, and adapted to grip the sides of a jar, and a lever for operating both the clamping members and the pressure member.
