To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JONATHAN ELMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at ridgcton, in the county of Cumberland and State of New Jerse have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe leaning and Polishing Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved shoe cleaning and polishing device, the object of the invention being to provide improvements of this character, which when supported, the cleaning or polishing cloth will open to admit the shoe between the cloth and the platform, and a pressure on the platform serves to draw the cloth tight upon the shoe, and thus enable any desired friction to be had.

The openings 8 in lugs 7 are sufficiently large to allow of the pivotal movement of the members 1 and 2 relative to each other, and this pivotal movement of the members will position the rollers 9 sufficiently above the platform to allow the shoe to be entered on the platform, and below a cloth 11 passed below the rollers 9. This cloth 11 is preferably secured at its ends to bars 12, and handles 13 are secured to the said bars to facilitate the manipulation of the cloth.

In operation, the handles 13 are grasped and the device permitted to fall until stopped by the cloth, when the force of gravity will compel the platform members to hinge, positioning the platform below the cloth, when the shoe can be readily 1nserted between the platform and the cloth. l/Vhen the device is upon the floor and pressure is applied upon the platform, rollers 9 and the cloth 11 will be drawn downwardly, so as to press the cloth tightly against the shoe, and the greater this pressure the greater will be the frictional contact, and while in such position the cloth may be manipulated from side to side to clean or polish the shoes as will be readily understood.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

In a device of the character described, the combination of a platform comprising two members, side bars on said members, the bars of one member projecting beside the other member, a. hinge pin projecting through said bars, and hinging the platform members together, perforated lugs on the ends of said bars, parallel rollers and journals on said rollers in said perforated 5.
