Description
screw; of a pendent arm and hereafter explained; and
Laim Patent No.` 95,117?, dated'sepamter 21, 1869.
j IMPR'QVEDMAGHINE Pon` ,TURNING TAPERS.
`'J'he .Schedule referred to\ in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
YKnow all men Aby these presents p That'LGLARK J ILLsoN, of the city and connty of p 'Worcestely and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain 'new and useful Improvements in Machines for Turning Tapers; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear,.and exact description of the same, reference being had to the'accompanying drawings, forming@ part of this speciiication, in
which- 4 Figure 1 represents a side view of my machine for turniugtapers;
Figure 2 represents a top or plan view; and
Figure?) represents a front view. To enable those 'skilled inthe art to which my invention belongs, to make and use thefsame, I will proceed to describe the same more in detail..
lhe nature of my invention consists-- I' j d First, in the,` combinatiomwith s aid tool-'operating guide-screw, as will be Secondpin the'combination, with the pendent arm,
`of two adjustable guide-screws, as will 'be hereafter set forth.
' v In the drawings- Y A represents the base bf the machine, upon which are supported the bearing-pieces lB B, in which turns the operating-shaft orfspindle Op, having a hole through its centre for thepassage of the wire a, or other arti- 4cle'sto be pointed or tapered;`
. y A set-screw, b, `is insertedin the front of spindle G,v to hold the wire 1a, or articles to be pointed in position i while the taper is being turned.` Upon ways D D a sliding table, E, isaxranged to Amove back and forth.
\ Upon this table is lsecined the stand F, inv which is fitted an eye or rest, c, and on the front of said stand are secured two guide-pieces d d, having notches or recessesto receive the` cutting-tool e, which is drawn back by means of the-.spiral spn'ng j', one. end of which is attached to the cuttingftoohfand'the other to the outer guide-piece d.
l The cutting-tooli`s forced toward the centre ofthe eye or rest c,.by means of `a screw, g, which passes through a ang'e, G, onthe stand F, said screw having a` pendent arm, 71 secured to its outer end, as fully shown in iig. 1.
The lower end of the pendent arm It extends down between the inner ends of the adjustable guide-screws fm, which are fitted in the standards'fn. n.
The feet o-o of the Vstandards n n are slotted, so l that they can be adjusted toward or from each other,
`and are secured in place'uponthe base A by the setscrews 1 l. l
The stands n are provided with a series of holes, 2, so that the screws can be adjusted nearer to or fur-v ther frorn the centre of the tool-operating screw g.
The table E may be held on its ways by means of a weight, H, suspended from its under side.
The operation is'as follows:
rlhe wire, or other articlesupon which a taper is to be turned, is passed through the hole in the spindle C,
and secured by means of the set-screw 1).
A rapid motion is no'w imparted to spindle C by means of a belt running upon pulley I.
Table E is now run on its ways toward the spindle .C by 4means of a 1ev er,or otherwise, and by which operation the end of the article to be tapered will run-- throughthe eye or rest c, and the screw g Vturned back in consequenceof its pendent arm rstrihing against the end of one of the screws .m5, as shown in tig. 1, I
whereby the end of the wire will be turned intaper form. l
By adjusting'the screwrods 'm up or down, a greater or less taper may be given to lthe end of the wire i turned. v y Having described my improved machine for turning j tapers, j j
'What I claim therein j as new and of my invention,
anddesire to secureby Letters` Patent, is-V 1. vThe combination, with the tool-operating screw and pendent arm h, of al guide-screw, substantially as andfor the purposes set forth. 4
2. The combination, with the pendent arm, of two adjustable guide-screws lm m, arranged relatively to each other, as shown in the drawings, andfor the purposes set forth.
y Witnesses:
Tnos. H. DODGE, Gmo. H. MILLER.
