IMPROVED MACHINE IOIt THREADING 'IHIMBLE-SKEINS.
TO ALL WIIOM IT MAYOONOERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. NORTON, of Dundee, in the county of Kane, in the State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Screw-Cutting Machine for Thimble-Skeins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, and to the letters of reference marked, thereon, making a part of thisI specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view oi' my invention. l

This invention relates to a machine which is especially designed forcntting screw-threads on the ends of thimble-skeins, and for this reason it has a simple construction, and so that it' may be used b v persons having ordinary knowledge of this kind of mechanical work; and its nature consists inthe use of a substantial iro'n bed-plate, to which are rigidly attached two upright metal standards, arranged to support the gearing, and a dove- Atail guide, on which is made to operate an adjustable slide, supporting'a head, and having Iixed to it a removable device for holding the larger end of the skein in position when the screw-threads are beingcut; and further, in an adjustable lever, arranged to slide on a. rod attached to said bedeplate, and used to operate the adjustable slide when holding the `skein in o1` removing it from the machine; and the use of a lever pivoted to lugs attached to the bed-plate, and arranged to operate the dies which out the screw.
In order to give a correct understanding of 'my invention, I have marked corresponding parts with similar letters, and will now give such a detailed description as will enable others skilled in the art to make and use it.
A represents an iron bed-plate, having cast solid to it, or otherwise rigidly fastened, two standards I I, for
supporting the gearing K K V, which operates the die-shaft J, and a dove-tail guide, A, on which a slide, A', is made to haye a reciprocating motion longitudinally, for the purpose of holding skeins of diierent lengths and removing them from the machine. And to accomplish this, the slide A-l is made to terminate in a vertical head, B, andthe latter to support a device, G, which holds the' large end of the skein in the machine.' This device is made of cast metal, and with a projecting lug, H, of such size and shape as will tit the hole in the skein, and thus hold it in place while the screwithread is .being cut. I
I use such a number of these devices as will correspond'with the diiierent sizes of the skeins, and fasten them to the head B by 'means ,oi bolt a. A rod, C, is rigidly attached to one side of the bed-plate A, and made to'supporta slide, D, held in place by a setscre\v, e'. Said slide is jointed to a lever, E, used to movethe slide A', and also to'hold the thimble-skein U in place. AA hook, F, being attached to the head B, provides a support for one side of the lever, and said head the other side. l
The arrangement for moving the dies is as follows: An elbow-lever, L, is made to turn in lugs M M, cast solid to the bed-plate A, and to support a standard,N, attached to said lever between the lugs, and made to lock in a groove in a collar, O. This collar is madefto slide on a. shaft, J, by bearing down or raising up said lever L, and thus move the connecting-rods T, which operate the levers I), and move the dies S, which cut the thread. All parts of the machine, including the die-head Z supported on the shaft J, I consider common and well known, therefore do not claim them as a part of my invention. i

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The improved machine for threading thimble-skeins, consisting of' the parts herein specified and shown, all constructed and arranged as described.l
2. The device G, with the lng H- thereon, the slide A having ahead, B, the rod C, slide D, lever E, andv hook F, all constructed and arranged substantially in the manner set forth.
