The Schedule referredto in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.'

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUIS HILLEBRAND, 'of' the `city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Penusylvania, have .invented a new and useful Improvement` in Trunk-Hasps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a fullrclear, and exact description of the saine, sufiicient to enablepothers skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, referencel being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of `this specication, in which- Figure l is a front view of the device illustrating the lock without the employment of hinges, as in ordinary cases.

In the drawings- -f v A represents the hasp, having openings made in its upper end7 through which nails 01'` screws are passed for 'se'curing/ the hasp to the lid of the` trunk or elsewhere. To this `hasp is` riveted, or otherwise fastened an eye,`.or staple lB, which enters the opening in the lock, and receivesthebolt thereof. y `The hasp A -is cutout of a strip of spring-metal, slightly bent, so that when' secured to the lid of the trunk, and free fromthe loek,-it will stand out as seen in fig. 2.

The operation of locking the trunk requires no special mention. The hasp is forced'againstthe lock, the staple B ente-rs the opening, and the latter is caught by the bolt, and thus held until released.

To `unlock the trunk, the key is turned, and so soon i as the bolt clears the staple, the liasp flies out,and frees itself from the lock.

It has been usual hitherto to construct hasps of two parts, connected together by a pintle, so as to constitute a hinge, in order that the lower part may be swung from the lock.

, By my invention, said piutle, or hinge is dispensed with, whereby strength7 simplicity, and clieapness are 1 combined.

1 may construct my hasps of two parts, and connect them by a piece' of spring-metal, as seen in fig. 3, but

i the operation is similar to that previously described.

The means of fastening the hasp to the lid or other intended object may he varied.

Having thus described my invention, .What I claim as new,4and dcsire'to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A hasp constructed of spring-metal, substantially `as described.
