GEORGE W. COX, OF ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS.
DOUBLE-FLAP ENVELOP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, tinouon \V. Cox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock island, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful ln'iproVements in .Double l lap .lGnvelops, of which the following is a specifiertion.
This invention relates to safety envelops, and the object ot the invention is to provide an envelop constructed of a single blank of suitable material, such as paper or the like, which is so arranged or constructed that an attempt to interfere with or remove the contents oi the same may be readily detected.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progrosses, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts. hereinat'ter' fully described and claimed.
in the drznvings there has been illustratml a simple and preferred embodiment of the invention, and in which:
Figure .l is a perspective view of an envelop constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. is a vertical transverse sectional view oi the envelop when scaled. Fig. 3 is a view of the blank from which the envelop is constructed.
The improved safety envelop is constructed of a single blank of suitable material, and comprises what may be termed a body or base portion 1 of a substantially rectangular form, having divided therefrom, by suit able scores, the side flaps 2 and 3, the top flap 4t and the bottom flap The side flaps 2 and are arranged at a direct right angle to the top and bottom flaps 4t and 5. The side flap 2 has its upper portion arranged substantially in a direct line with the score which separates the body 1 and top flap l, while its lower edge is arranged at an angle and provided with a depending tongue 9. By reference to Fig. 2 of the drawing, it will be noted that the flap 9 is of a substantially rectangular form and has its horizontal edge in a substantially horizontal line with the score which divides the body 1 and the bot.- tom flap 5.
The side flap 3 has its upper edge arranged at an angle as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing and its lower outer portion provided with a tongue 10. The tongue 9 of the flap 2, as well as the tongue 10 01": the
flap 3, is divided from the vertical edges of Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November Patented Feb. 22, 1910.
4, 1908. Serial No. 461,040.
the bottom flap 5 by suitably inclined cutaway portions as is also plainly shown in Fig. I) of the drawing.
The bottom [lap has its vertical edges adjacent the score which divides it from the body 1 provided with suitable slits (3, the purpose of which will presently be set forth and the lower extremity of the bottom flap is scored as at T, to provide a sealing flap 8.
In assembling the envelop, the side flap 3 is bent upon its score so as to overlie the body 1, and the side flap 2. is likewise bent upon its score so as to overlie the flap 3. It is to be understood that the edges of these flaps are provit'led with a suitable adhesive substance, whereby the said flaps are secured together. The bottom flap 5 is now bent upon its score and upon the side flaps 2 and E3. The portion of the bottom flap between the slit (3 and the score which divides the said flap lrom the body is now inserted within the inclined cut-away portion adjacent; the tongues t) and 10 ot' the side flaps 2 and 3. It is to be understood that these inserted portions are provided with a suitable adhesive substance, whereby they are securely connected with the said side flaps between one of the vertical edges of the tongues 9 and 10 and the vertical scores which divide the said side flaps from the body 1. The top flap l: having its edges provided with an adhesive substance is next bent downwardly upon the side flaps 2 and 3 and between the bottom flap 5. The sealing flap 8 is now bent upon its score 7, so as to engage the opposite face of the envelop, it being understood that the said sealing flap is provided with a suitable adhesive sub stance, whereby the latter is securely connected with the outer face of the body 1.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
A safety envelop comprising a body portion divided by scores from its side flaps and its top and bottom flaps, one of the said flaps having its upper edge extending in a parallel line with the score dividing the body from the top flap, and the lower edge of this side flap being provided with a projecting tongue separating from its point of connection with the bottom flap, the opposite side flap having its upper edge arranged at an angle in relation to the body and top flaps, and also having its lower ed 'e provided with an angular cut-away portion adtit) lll3
jacent its point of connection with the body In testimony whereof I affix my signature flap, the bottom flap havingfiits 1soide edges in presence of two Witnesses. slitted, and the said bottom a ein also provided with a longitudinal sdbre flli d the GEORGE 5 portion extending beyond the score being Vitnesses:
