UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK THOMAS PLESTER, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
PAPER BOX OR PACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,114, dated December 3, 1901.
Original application filed June 3, 1901, Serial No. 63,001. Divided and this application filed August 12, 1901. Serial No, 71,779. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK THOMAS PLES- TER, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 17 Tyneham road, Lavender Hill, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Connected with Paper Boxes or Packets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention for improvements in or connected with paper boxes or packets has for its object to provide a rectangular paper packet that can readily be made from a paper blank by machinery and be filled before it is closed down.
According to this invention a blank piece of paper of the desired dimensions is provided. Four sides are folded up from the bottom, folds being formed in the vertical edges to take up the surplus paper. The top parts of two sides are then folded over the top and then the top parts of the two remaining sides are consecutively folded down.
The present application is a division of my copending application, Serial No. 63,001, filed June 3, 1901.
In the accompanying sheet of illustrative drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a suitable paper blank for forming a packet according to this invention, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of a packet partly formed. Fig. 3 is a view of the complete box.
The box or packet consists of a bottom 1, four sides 2 3, having folds 4 lying along the longer sides 3, two flaps 5, extending from the shorter sides 2, a short flap 6, extending from one longer side 3, and a long flap 7, extending from the other longer side 3 and overlapping the fiap 6.
In making the box from a rectangular sheet of paper the corners of the paper are preferably cut away, as clearly shown at 8 in Fig. 1. The four sides 2 3 are folded up from the bot tom, folds being simultaneously formed at the vertical angles 9 9 to take up surplus material and lying preferably inside and along the longer sides 3. The upper parts 5 of the two shorter sides 2 are then folded down over the top and the upper parts 6 and 7 of the longer sides 3 are consecutively folded over the parts 5 on the top. It will readily be seen that by this construction an open-topped packet is formed, having its largest face at the top, so that it can readily be filled. When it has been filled, the extended sides can be folded over the top to close the packet and may be pasted down.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-- A box or packet made from a single rectangular sheet of paper having the corners cut away at 8 and consisting of a bottom 1, four sides, 2, 3, having folds at the Vertical meeting edges of the sides, said folds being along the crease-lines defining the angles 9 9,said sides 3 being longer than the sides 2, two flaps 5, at the top extending from the horizontal edges of the sides 2 inward toward the center, a short flap 6 extending from the horizontal top edge of one of the sides 3 toward the center and a long flap 7 extending from the horizontal top edge of the other side 3 and overlapping the flap 6.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my sig-- nature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT J ONES, HERBERT O. BOLWELL.
