STOVEPIPE-LOCK.
Application led June 29, 1909.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WIHJIAM HAMPTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Metz, in the county of Presque Isle and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved stove pipe lock for use in securing lengths of stove pipe together at a joint to prevent the pipe from bending or sagging and prevent the same from becoming unjointed or slipping, the said invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure 1 is an elevation of portions of two lengths of a stove pipe joined together and provided with one of my improved locks for securing said lengths together. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal sectional view of the stove pipe lock, showing the members thereof secured together. Eig. 3 is a detail plan of the tongue member of my improved lock. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the base or plate member.
My improved stove pipe lock comprises a plate 1 and a tongue member 2 for attachment respectively to the lengths of a stove pipe at a joint and to extend across the joint. The lengths 3, 4, of the pipe are respectively provided on one side with studs 5, 6, which project outwardly therefrom. The plate or base member 1 which bears on the stove pipe length or member 3, has near its outer end an opening 7 for the reception of the stud 5, the other end of the said plate being disposed between overlapping portions of the lengths of the pipe. The said plate is further provided with transverse openings 8, 9, at a suitable distance from its ends and with a keeper 10 on its outer side, which keeper is disposed between the said openings 8, 9. As here shown and in practice, the keeper is formed integrally with the plate by providing the latter with a pair of transverse slits 11, a longitudinal slit between and connecting the slits 11 and by out-turning the arms 12 which are thus formed between the slits.

The tongue member 2 is here shown as formed with a circular base 13 at one end of the tongue portion 14, the said base portion 13 bearing on the stove pipe member 4 and having an opening 15 to receive the stud 6.
The tongue of the tongue member is passed through the opening 8 of the plate, longitudinally under said plate or between it and the stove pipe member 3, then outwardly through the opening 9 and its terminal portion is bent reversely to lie on the outer side of said plate and is engaged by the arms 12 of the keeper 10 which arms are bent downwardly on the terminal portion of the said tongue as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. It will be understood that the said keeper arms thus hold the terminal reversely bent portion of the tongue on the outer side of the plate and prevent the withdrawal of the tongue from the openings 8 and 9, of the plate and hence the tongue member and the plate member coact with the studs of the stove pipe joints or members to eectually lock such stove pipe members together.
My improved stove pipe lock is exceedingly cheap and simple, is very strong and durable and is very easily applied to or detached from the pipe.
What is claimed is In combination with the members of a stove pipe at a joint, a plate attached to one member extending under the other and hav ing its exposed portion provided with openings spaced apart and a keeper on its outer side between said openings and a tongue attached to the last named member of the pipe, said tongue extending through one of said openings of the plate, thence under said plate and through the other opening and having its terminal portion bent reversely and lying on the outer side of the plate and extending through and engaged by the said keeper.
