DETACHABLE FASTENING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,865, dated December 8, 1896.

' a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to detachable fastenin gs,and more especiallyto those used on shirtstuds and similar articles, my object being to provide a fastening which shall be simple, durable, and capable of easy insertion and withdrawal and which shall at the same time be perfectly secure against accidental re moval or displacement.

In the accompanying drawings I have shown my improved fastening applied to a shirt-stud; but it will be understood that it may be applied with equal advantage to any other article where such a fastening is desirable. 1

In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shirt-stud provided with my fastening ready for insertion. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same, the studproper being removed. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the position of the parts when fastened, vi. 6., secured against withdrawal.

My fastening is made of wire, either flat or round, of suitable elasticity, and consists in a flat coil 2, preferably formed integral with the shank 3 of the stud 1 and disposed substantially at right angles thereto, and having its free end 5 so arranged that it will normally lie across a portion of the said coil 2, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the said end 5 being capable of being sprung around the bend 6 of the coil, so that it may be located either above or below the same, as desired. It results from this construction that when the end 5 is below the coil 2, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the stud may be readily inserted or withdrawn in the same manner as an ordinary screw-fastenin g; but when the stud is to be locked in place after insertion the end 5 is bent laterally against the elasticity of the wire and is slipped around the bend 6 into the position shown in Fig. 3, where it lies between the coil 2 and the back of the shirt-bosom and locks the stud inan obvious manner against any possibility of accidental withdrawal. The end 5 projects slightly beyond the coil 2, in order that it may be readily engaged for the purpose of unlocking the fastening. If it were to stop at a point within the coil 2, it would be difficult of access when fastened, owing to its position between the coil and the shirt-bosom.

I am aware of Letters Patent No. 321,690, issued July 7, 1885, to A. O. Olausen, and No. 415,459, issued November 19, 1889, to J. P. Hickey, and I disclaim the inventions therein shown. Both of those devices are permanent and not detachable fastenings and could. not serve the purposes of my invention-first, because the wires of which they are composed have small abrupt bends or kinks in them for locking purposes which would prevent them from being pushed through a stiff shirtbosom, and, second, because the free end of the wire in each of them stops within the periphery of the coil, and hence is so inaccessible when looked as to be practically worthless for any purpose which requires a readilydetachable fastening.

I claim as my invention- A detachable fastening for shirt-studs and similar articles, consisting of a shank 3 prolonged'to form a fiat coil 2 disposed substan tially at right angles to the said shank and having its free end 5 arranged to normally lie across a portion of the said coil 2 and projcct slightly beyond the same, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
