WIRE-SECURING CLIP.
Application filed May 6, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON BRUFLAT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Barneveld, in the county of Iowa and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Securing Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wire securing clips or staples for use in mounting strand wires or a fence webbing in the proper relation, and more particularly to such devices as are adapted for use upon metal fence posts.
Metal fence posts are ordinarily made up of sheet metal shaped to the proper form and provided with alined slotted openings throughout the height thereof to have the single strand of wire or the line wires of a fence web placed adjacent thereto and have a single securing wire looped through the slotted openings from the rear of the post to engage over the single strand or over the line wires of the webbing, but with such a structure as this it is necessary to place the securing wire through the slotted openings and back again, and further it is not possible to remove a single wire without disturbing the securing means for the remaining wires.
,With these points in mind, it is an'object of my invention to so construct a clip that an archoring portion may be fitted through the slotted openings of steel or metal posts as now constructed and the clip may then be turned to permit fitting of the wires to be secured between wire engaging fingers which will when bent down around the wire not only secure the wire in the proper mounting on the post but will at the same time hold the clip against turning movement to a relation in which the anchoring portions might become disengaged in the slotted openings.
A further object is to so construct the clips that they can be fitted in place and clenched over the line wires of a fence web-.

With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter set forth Specification of Letters Patent.

The clip may be stamped or otherwise shaped, to the desired form and as is shown, this clip or staple is made up of a. single piece of wire. The central portion of the piece of wire is left straight to form the body 1 of the anchoring portion and the ends are then looped over to one side as shown at 2 and 8 and at the approximate center of the body portion 1 are bent forwardly in the arms l and 5 which are curved outwardly and then hooked over to form the securing fingers 6 and 7.
As the device is manufactured, the securing fingers 6 and 7 which are of hooked like form are so disposed that a space is left between their ends, as is shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the relations of the parts illustrated in Fig; 1 being that after the securing fingers are clutched or bent down to the securing relation. The post 9 which is shown here as being of the usual sheet metal construction shaped to the proper form is provided with the slotted openings 10 made of a length slightly greater than onehalf the length of the body portion 1, and by fitting the body portions 1 through this slotted opening and then turning the clip to the relation shown in Fig. 3, the body portion will act to anchor the clip against being again pulled forwardly through the slotted openings so long as the clip is maintained in this relation, and then when the securing fingers (S and 7 are bent down to the relation shown in Fig. 1 where they embrace the wire, the staple will. be mounted in a relation to lock the wires and to be also looked against removal from the post.
In the use of the staple or clip, the fence web or strand wires may be clipped adjacent to the post and the clips or staples may be mounted through the slotted openings of the post and brought to the relation shown in Fig. 3 after which the line wires of the web or the strand wires may be fitted between the holding fingers 6 and 7 and a pair of pliers may be used to pinch these fingers G and 7 together so that the extreme ends thereof will overlap and the wire will thus be clenched within the clip to be held against displacement. As the fingers 6 and 7 will be brought down against the wire, the clip will be held against return movement to the relation shown in Fig. 2 where they would be permitted to become displaced through the slotted openings, and the clips will be positively held and will also positively secure the wires against displacement.
If it is desired'to release the wires, it is only necessary to pry apart or otherwise separate the fingers 6 and 7 and then the grasp of the clips around the wires against the post is released and not only may the wire be removed from the clip, but also the clip may be turned substantially a quarter revolution where it may be removed through the slotted openings, and if the wire from which the clips are constructed be of suflicient resiliency and elasticity, the clips may be used and reused a number of times.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a lock wire staple or clip for metal posts which is so constructed that such web or strand wire may be secured about the post, also that although the wires and the clips are positively held against dis placement by the closing of the clips upon the wires, these parts may be equally as readily opened without destroying the utility of the clip and both wires and clips will be released, and while I have herein shown and described only one specific form of the device, it will be understood that slight modifications and variations might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to be limited to the exact disclosure Copies of this patent may be obtained for but only to such points as may be set forth in the claims.
I claim:
1. A wire securing clip for use in conjunction with a. metal post having elongated openings therein, comprising a single piece of wire bent and folded upon itself to form an elongated and substantially flat anchoring portion to be received through one of the openings of the post and to be heldin place therein the clip is given a quarter turn, and a portion of the wire shaped to be closed upon the line Wire which is to be secured-and to thus fasten the line wire in place on the post and at the same time hold the clip against return movement to the relation in which it can be removed from the opening of the post.
2. A wire securing clip for use in conjunction with a metal post having slotted openings therein, comprising a single piece of wire bent up and shaped to form an elongated anchoring portion, the ends of the ire being bent angularly from one side of the anchoring portion and then shaped to form securing fingers originally disposed in a spread relation, and all of said parts being so arranged that the anchoring portion may be inserted through the slotted opening and when the clip has been turned to dis-' pose the anchoring portion in a relation to be held against displacement the wire to be secured may be inserted between the fingers and these fingers may be closed down upon the wire to secure the same against displacement and to also hold the clip against turning movement to become dislodged from the anchoring relation within the slotted opening.
