HOLDER FOR RAZOR-BLADES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Leon A. FLINKER, a. citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan. county and State of N-!W York, have in vented a new and useful Holder for Razor-- Blades, of which the following is a specitication.
The invention is a device for holding safetywazor blades during the operation of sharpening the same.
The device is adapted to hold these blades while stropping the same either by hand or by machine, in which latter case the holder is secured. Within the machine in one well known way or another.
The device is adapted to hold the various types of safety-razor blades on the market, some of the well known types of which are the Gillette, the Zion and the Star.

The holder consists of the members A, B, hinged or pivoted together at one of their side edges so that they may be opened for the introduction or removal of the blade or blades. As shown. the member A is provided at each end with a lug a, and the member B is similarly provided with a lug 71, said lugs of the respective members being arranged in lapping order and connected pivotally by short pins 6'. The manner daf pivoting the members A, B, may however, be changed as desired by the skilled eonstructor. Each member is cutaway or notehed at c? c in its free edge, at or about the middle thereof, and between the notches, eaeh member is formed with a finger'piece (Z. On one side of the notches c a, the members A. B are somewhat wider than on the other side of the notches, so as to roduce clamping jaws e e which are of (itterent widths, although this is not essential. It is preferred to stamp each. member from a piece of sheet metal, for simplicity and economy in inanu'l'aeture. For retaining the perforated donbleedged blades of Gillette razors, it is preferred to construct the jaws e of the holder as shown by the drawings, while for holding a short razor blade of the conventional cross sectional form such asare. used in the safety razor of the Zion type or the .itar" type, the jaws e 81%: constructed to retain the blades against endwise or sliding displacmneut in the holder.

The companion jaw o of th member B is provided with notches g. g. which are opposite to the clips or hooks f f. whereby said clips are adapted to fit in the notches when the members A. B are closed. It preferred, also. to provide the jaws. (a of the member, B. with the stud or lug 77. while the jaw. c, of the other mem her, A. is provided with an opening It, the latter being opposite to the stud or lug.
To use a blade X of the Gillette type in the holder. the members A B are opened. and the blade is placed flat on thejaw e of the member A, the clips f f passing throu 'h two of the holes in the blade, shown by Fig. 8. The blade is now moved edgewise in an inward direction toward the hinged edge of the holder. and the eli )S f are thus made to hip over the blade whereby the blade isco'nfined between thejaw e of the 'l'? member A and the clips. Said clips serve to hold the blade against displacement in any direction on the member A, that is, it cannot move edgewise either longitudinally or transversely, nor can it move sidewise because the member A holds it against movement in one direction and the clips f f in the other direction. The members A, B, may now be closed on the blade X without the possibility of the blade becoming displaced during the operations of opening or closing the holder, and when closed, the jaws e, c, of said members engage with the respective sides of the blade. The holder may now be manipulated so as tosharpen one edge of the blade, after which the holder is opened, the blade 1(,V8l:t!(l and reinserted in the holder, the latter is again closed, and the device mani )ulated to sharpen the other edge of the lade. When the members A. B,'are closed. the stud h of one member passes through the middle hole of the blade X as shown by Fig. 4-, and assists the clips f f in retainin the blade in place in said holder.
For l'tOlt ing the blade Y of ordinary construction employed in some types of safety razors, the holder provided on the jaw o" of one of the members, as A. with the lips z' 2", see Fig. 1 and the dotted lines in Fig. The lips are cut and bent from the metal of the member A, and said lips are spaced from each other equal to the length of the blade Y. The lips are near the ends of the jaw a, and they are parallel to each other, so that the blade Y may be placed between them. as shown by dotted lines in Fig. The lips hold the blade against cndwiso movement as the holder is opened and closed. When the members are closed, the jaws c c grip the blade. and the device can be manipulated readily for stroppiug the blade.
In the construction shown, wherein the members are pivoted together at. their ends, the middle portion of the members are liable to bond when the holder is used by hand. To overcome j l I l l i f l l l l l this. a longitudinal reinforcing I rib j is employed. said rib being attached 1 3 or lnade integral with the member and ar-- ranged to engage with' the member li when they are closctl.
As before stated, the holder may be used in a sharpening machine or it can be worked by hand. In using it in a machine, the holder with the blade therein is adapted to be placed in a main holder of a sharpening machine as disclosed in another application filed even date herewith.
It is desirable at times to lock the members A, B. when the holder is used by hand. and to this end I may employ any suitable kindof fastener. As shown in Fig. 7, a spring clasp O is adapted to bei sljfffped around the holder after the blade is ins ed and the members closed thereon. This spring clasp may be of any suitable type i i l l l ing a single clip. such as f or f, for holding a perforated safety razor blade, but it is preferred to use a plurality of clips on one member of the holder. As a new article of manufacture. a holder for safety razor blades having members for clamping the blade, one of 'said members being 'n' vidcd with means fUl positioning the blade thereon. which means also serve to prevent movement of said razor blade transversely of the plane of the blade when said members are in their nonclamping' position.
As a new article of manufacture, a holder for safety razor blades having membcl's for clamping the blade, one of said members being provided with clips for engaging with one face of the blade. said clips operating. also, when the members are in their non-clamp1ng position to retain it against movement transversely of the plane of the blade.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a holder for safety razor blades having members pivoted together for clamping said blate, one of said members being provided \vitlr clips stamped up from said member and which clips occupy a plane substantially pa rallcl to the plane of the member and em tend in a direction away from the line on which -the"meihbers are pivoted, the said clips serving to iosition a blade on the member and to preclude movement of the blade in a direction at right angles to the plane of the blade when the members are in their non-cl mping position.

As a new article of manufacture, a holder for safety razor bladoq, comprising two clamping members connected pivotally to each other and ope atirg, when closed. to retain a blade to be sharpened in position between them, one of said members being provided with means adapted for engagement with one side or face of the blade, whereby when said clamping members are opened. said clips operate to retain the blade against movement in a direction at right angles to the plane of the blade.

In a device for stropping razors, holder for safety razor blades having two members pivoted to each other for clamping a blade between them. tlfe said members being pivoted lengthwise of the blade and each being provided with an extension having manually operated means independent of the clamping faces of the members for readily opening the members.

A holder for sa ety-razor blades comprising two members hinged together. each member having a plurality of jaws adapted to cooperate with like jaws 0n the other member. the companion jaws at one end of said members havin 1 means for retaining an imperforate blade between them, and the companion jaws at the other end of said members having means for retaining a perforated blade in position between them.

A holder for safety-razor blades comprising members united by a hinge-connection, the axis of which extends lengthwise of the holder, said members having at one end complemental jaws adapted to confine an imp "forate blade in position, and the other end of said members hom provided with other complemental jaws adapted to confine a perforated blade in position between them.

A holder for safetymazor blades comprising members, a hinge-connection uniting said members at. one slde edge thereof, the axes of the hinge -connection bein lengthwise of the holder. and a plurality (if devices on the members for retaining perforated blades and imperforate blades, re-. spectively. in position between said membersat diti'ercnt portions thereof.
15. holder for safety-razor. blades comprising members united by a hinge, the axis of which is longitudinal with respect to said members, complemental jaws on said members at the respective sides of the transverse middle portion thereof, and devices on the respective jaws whereby a perforated blade may be retained between two of said jaws and an imperfo'ate blade is adapted to be held in position between two other of said jaws.
16. A holder for safety-razor blades comprising two members hinged together, means on said members for holding a perforated blade in position between a certain longitudinal "part of the members, and other means on the members for retaining an im" perforate blade in position between-another longitudinal part of said members.
